GREAT TOPIC!!!

I garden every year, and wanted to do more STUFF that would be good for when Lien is here. I was not sure really what to do. YOU listed a LOT, that will take quite a bit of space. Thanks for the LIST. It is time for planting here, but raining today sad.gif

If you are planting for fresh vege for Lien, then I would just ask her what vege she likes to cook with and cook them, the Bok Choy, and a few peppers, some carrots, and tomatoes, and 1 or two cucumber plants should be enough if you are limited on space, and it also depends on if you are wanting to can them or just eat them. Most things can be grown in a container, or a 5 gallon bucket, even cucumbers can be trained to grow up instead of out. I have a friend that grows everything in 5 gallon buckets, he has over 75 buckets that he plants in every year, he grows corn in them as well, he just has to tie the corn buckets and okra in groups of 4 so they do not tip over, the trick is to keep the holes higher up in the buckets, about 2/3 the way up so that the roots can stay dry but so that all the water does not run out onto the ground, and be careful not to over water the peppers, I usually just watch them, and if they start to get droopy then I will water them. Good luck Jerome

I always do Cucumbers, Basil, Green Beans and Tomatoes. I think i will do some Thia Peppers in a couple of containers (she likes the peppers in her sauces). I have never had any luck with eggplant for some reason. I have never tried Bok Choy before, maybe i will give it a try. Cilantro and green onions are cheap to buy at the store sooooo, i will not waste the space on those. Maybe a Bell peppers plants, some corn and some zuchini. LOVE this time of year!!!

what does everyone use to kill or prevent insects? I hate pesticides..but I hate bugs in my garden too...

For some strange reason I have never used pesticides ever. The main problem I ever had was weeds and those are a constant battle and almost daily I will be in the garden pulling them or chopping them up with a hoe. When I was younger we may get a worm or a few but the daily upkeep we would see them and kill them. Since I was crippled as a kid my job was the garden and learned all there was to know about them and plants and even had my own business with plants at one time. The other harder chores with the animals and tractor was done by the other siblings.

I keep the worms around as they stay near the compost pile. I get little nibblers in my greens and cabbage and sometimes my squash. The marigolds help some but not enough. Grandma had a rule. If you have time to see a weed you have time to pull it.

Different type worms. Compost piles and ground worms are very beneficial. Then friggin weeds are a pest. I would have worked very hard to pull and get rid of every weed in the beds in the morning time and by the afternoon I saw them start coming again. It was like they were taunting me.

Try vinegar...I read somewhere this works for both the weeds and the pesky animals...

Do a google on natural pesticides, and know what bugs are your problems, there are japanese beetle traps that help with that, but you can plant certain flowers that the bugs will avoid, depending on your climate there will be things you can and cant do. Here is a link that can help http://toadstoolponds.wordpress.com/2007/12/07/why-plant-marigolds-in-your-vegetable-garden/ This shows what to plant based on what is in your garden that you dont want there. Good luck Jerome

last week was the first I had tried growing Rau Muong... couldnt get seeds and Thuys mom said just put some young shoots in the ground and they will grow up... so I did just that with the addition of rootone and wow.. that stuff grows so fast!.. I love to eat it and it grows faster than spinach! Why is it so expensive if it grows so fast and easy?

Because people don't know much about it, it is rare in American cooking

Thai's and Chinese cook with it often.. Thai's even like it raw with a curry dish.. I am not up on having it Raw yet... This is the first year I have grown Rau Muong.. Didnt grow as great as I wanted in the ground.. Containers that hold water seem to do the trick much better.. If you see snails.. throw some of those used lime wedges around the plants and the snails will head for the citrus...
