I want to send money to the Philippines and am having problems with Xoom today. Never have had problems before. They said my account had been canceled so I had my Mom send through her account and she received an email saying that the transaction had been canceled because of a violation in the terms of service. What is going on?

I am not sure what is going on with Xoom. Apparently they have had some problems with abuse, as they have recently tightened up the controls on transfers to the Philippines. Over the years I have sent tens of thousands of dollars to my wife and her family using Xoom. The service has always been good. I was kind of disappointed in the new restrictions.

The minimum transfer amount was raised from $25 to $50. They also quit accepting PayPal for transfers to the Philippines.

I am sure that there is more to this than they are telling us. You can read the public details in the Xoom Blog.

[added by edit] I did see some Ebay vendors in the Philippines offering to accept a Xoom transfer as payment for goods. This may be a big part of the problem as Xoom sees it.

Ingats!

You and yer mom call Xoom, get a human in customer service, and get it sussed out.

Emails will be useless, you need Humans! .

Good Luck !

I see a lot of services where you can transfer money to a loved one in the Philippines, and none of them appealed to me in the least. Maybe check at your financial institution, like I did. My Institution has a card called Unidos, and all I do is a transfer from any of my accounts to this Unidos Card account, that has a debit card attached to said account that carries no monthly fees or transfer fees, and no annual fee. When my wife was in the Philippines I mailed her the Debit Card once I received it from my bank, and then called my bank to activate the card knowing it was safely in her possession, then after that told my then Fiancee the PIN. The only thing I paid was $2.00 withdrawl at my end and $2.00 ATM fee at her end. Much less than I was paying using Western Union or Money Gram which is a joke in the Philippines.

Great idea, but if I gave my girl an ATM card, my bank account would be empty very quickly...

Mine was reasonable. I only trasferred what she asked for, which was never a problem. She was so ashamed to even ask, but I knew when she need things. I always added a little extra. Think of it as a prepaid debit card.

Thanks...this sounds like something that could work. She also doesn't ask like me to send her money and that is the problem with Xoom. I usually only need to send her about %25-30 each month and Xoom has her marked now as a commerical acct...thanks to the blog spot information from above. This month I was trying to send because she has decided to have her wedding dress made there and then I will be sending more when she needs to get her medical and interview. Have another possible way to send money which will not cost anything but may check into the card idea. Thanks and I did tell Xoom that she is not a commerical acct but have not heard anything back and figure I won't.
