I was getting things ready for my AOS. As I was filling out the forms, I came across the part where it says to write the expiration date that is on my I-94. I looked at it and swear to God I can't make heads or tail outta of it. Its not legible. Never bothered with this before. Since I can't read the bad handwriting, what do I write now? My F1 visa expires on Nov 24 2010. I mean I can try to guess, but I don't wanna be in trouble over it.

Not familiar with the F1 visa so what I say only pertains to the K1 but may still be useful. The stamp shows the date of entry (4/8/2008), the "Class Until" date (hand written) says K1 July 07, 2008. That is the 90 day stay under the K1. I would assume that the F1 is only good for a specific period of time (would know that better than me). I would also assume that the date would be logical in that it might be 10 days from entry or 1 year from entry or 6 months etc. That might help you narrow down the possibilities. If you can't clear it up via phone call/Infopass, I would certainly include a good quality copy of it with the package and a note stating the reason for the copy and the problem. As for the date, I can only tell you what I would do and that may not be the best thing. I would write "See Attachement" and spell it all out in the note with the copy. Explain that you would rather have them decide than you risk giving bad information. Bad problem but great question.

p.s. I have seen Otto & Karin give some really intelligent answers on many subjects. If their answer makes sense to you (if what is written looks like it may be what they suggest), I would certainly run with it.

If you came on an F-1, your I-94 may very well have "D/S" written on it (Duration of Status)as opposed to an actual date.

I looked at it closely and now it looks like D/S. Thanks so I assume I just write D/S on the line they ask for the date it says on I-94?

Yes, it should say "D/S" - duration of status - on your I-94. In fact, as an F-1 holder, you should make sure (at least I was told by our intl student office) to make sure they write D/S as opposed to a real date on your I-94 every time you enter.

And yes, D/S was what I put for the date.

Good luck!

I'm keeping a blog detailing this journey!

RFE means "request for further evidence" or something along those lines. If USCIS needs more information for your case they will send you a letter known as RFE letting you know what, where and when to send it... Receiving a RFE, however, usually does not mean that your case is having problems but that more information is needed...

Hope this info helps...

I have, however, a question for you guys that is related to the PO's question. I arrived at the US as a visitor (B2 visa) and then I changed my status to Student (F1)... In the question that asks about the expiration date of my I-94 should I put the date that was stamped on my B2 I-94 or should I write D/S?

Thanks!

If you have a D/S form you should always put "D/S". It says in instructions on USCIS web site. But don't forget to send a copy of D/S.
