Why does what he said amount to 'sympathy'?

Society likes to deal with and make an example of the perpetrator (fair enough), but in doing so it hardly ever attempts to deal with the root cause, because that would involve askng some rather difficult questions.

Funny thing is, I doubt in prison he would get much "action" (in that sense of the word). You see some prisoners have children and knowing what he did to get there will make those prisoners think "Hmm he COULD have done that to my child!" He won't last more then a month or two.
