Guys, I cannot get any answers from anyone. My husband has been here just over a week. We ticked "yes" on the IV app to apply for a social security card. Now when I call the SS office, they tell me it will be 2 months til he gets his social security card? Is this true? I've tried to call USCIS and DHS but no one knows what to tell me. 2 months is too long to wait, he needs a job and so many other things we can't do without his SS card. Anyone can shed some light on this for me please?

It has been a week, hardly time to freak out... you also have been in this immigration game for a while and know that they will tell you to expect up to xxxx months when we all know it takes only a few weeks... so take anyting they say with a grain of salt, and dont start listining to the BS spewed by govt workers who read off a script that is written to CYA everyone...

Anyway... after 2 weeks, go to your local Social Security office and get your # and then they will mail the card after another week... You should have your # assigned after about 10 - 14 days after POE...

I checked off the magic box on the DS-230 as well but still applied in person 3 weeks after my POE. I had my application form prepared, provided my passport and birth certificate, had my card 6 days later.

Good luck.

If I arrive in the US on Monday, can I go to the SS office on Tuesday to apply for the SS number?

Or do I physically need my Green Card in order to apply at the local SS office?

Yes you can. You will need your passport. Your passport is your GC until you recieve the official GC in mail.

Good luck

You don't have to wait for them to send you SS Card. You can go to the Social Security Office and apply for a SS Card. You need to show them your passport.

Good luck

Yes, my wife waited for 4 weeks after POE, for SS but nothing happened. She went to SS office and applied in person. Card came in within 10 days.

She also got her permanent residence card within 2 weeks of POE.
