Out of curiosity...when & if I get my visa in my hand, is it all possible to get married before POE? I would really love to get married on a beach at an all inclusive. After POE the options drop, & the prices go up (Hawaii, Puerto Rico, & no all inclusives)

Does the wedding need to happen after POE to keep the visa legit?

Your fiance needs to enter the US with the K1 visa (otherwise known as "POE") and then you can get married anywhere you want in America.

"To keep the visa legit," the recipient beneficiary of the K-1 visa needs to enter the US (at a Point of Entry, otherwise acronymed as POE) as a single person, meaning not already married. Once in America, marriage with US citizen that petitioned petitioned the k-1 visa recipient, must occur within the prescribed 90 days.

Another way of saying it is yes, sure marry before entering the USA is up to you. The result is you start over with a spouse visa process. Where to marry is a decision you make before you begin a visa process. Otherwise you start over.

There are beach-y all inclusives in Puerto Rico (such as Copamarina Beach Resort)... unless even that one has shut down xD

And I would not be surprised if there were all inclusives in Florida or Hawaii too.

Last I checked, airfare to San Juan from O'Hare was cheaper than airfare to Miami. xD

You cannot be legally married before entering the country on your K-1 visa. No one is going to stop you from having an ocean side party before arriving. Many many many K-1's do a legal wedding and then a larger do on their first anniversary (for example).

You should be very aware that people have been denied entry on a K-1 visa for using the words "My wife/husband" I'm sure wedding bands wouldn't go over so well either. So don't go shooting yourself in the foot, OK??

Ditto - no marriage prior to POE unless you are asking for trouble and reapplying for spousal visa after denial at entry.

Unless of course you want to go somewhere and have a big wabash with no legal ceremony.

If your legally married prior to entry to the US the K-1 is null and void.

With the current economy you might be suprised with the "all inclusive" deals you might find within the confines of the US.

Patience is a virtue with immigration. Besides, by the time you reach the POE stage, you WILL be together - so I don't exactly get the need to try and marry before he even touches US soil. Saving $ on flights does make sense, but that's not how it works unfortunately! Maybe the K1 wasn't the way to go if that was a consideration.

The PoE will ask your fiance their marital status when they go to enter the US. If the answer is "married", or if CBP have strong reasons to even suspect the answer is "married", they will cancel that visa and deny entrance, right then and there.

DON'T PANIC

-Douglas Coupland
