In regards to looking directly at the person and saying 'Hi' I think it would depend on the situation. I've been told repeatedly a good rule of thumb in large cities is 'no eye contact'. If your dealing with a crazy "Hiya" isn't the best approach..I'm wondering if that was the older gentlemans reasoning.

Exactly, and on top of that I don't feel like saying HELLO to people I don't know. I don't have to be "polite" to all the people walking on the street or in a restaurant...JHow can someone say it is his fault for not saying HI to the guy or looking at him.

Do we need to be fake and smile at everyone, say hi and pretend we try to make friends with them so that they don't assault us....GOD what has become of us people?

The way to find out if you love someone or not, is by talking to them.

The more you talk to them the more you either hate them or love them.

Is our society more concerned about being sympathetic and analytical towards violent criminals than protecting our vulnerable citizens?

The man in question not only did not look "vulnerable" (other then an older man) but he also looked well to do. The later made him a prime target.

Add into that he was lax in his judgement of the situation and BAM he got what was coming.

I am not condoning the criminal!

But if you're a mouse, I don't suggest going to the snake hole...

Where's the mouse? Probably in the kitchen somewhere eating a Big Mac..... Again, we go back to comparing people to animals which is totally irrelevant here. Observing animals will not give us any insight into the personal responsibilities of human beings. We are a little more complex than snakes and mice. As for answering the top question, your statement shows where your interests lie. The man did not deserve to be attacked which is what "BAM he got what was coming" means in my interpretation. If you truly believe this I feel bad for you. Think about it, who is truly responsible for a violent crime that occurs in a place of business?

The victim, the perpetrator, the business or a combination of the three?

I'd go with the perpetrator as would the rest of civilized society.

After I slept on it, I realized that making eye contact isn't always the best response. For example, I've read that when in a car at night and when you're stopped at an intersection, it's recommended that you don't look into the car next to you. But again every situation is unique. Maybe the older man could've shown that he's aware of the young man's presence without it being a stare down - like not turn his back towards him? One thing I thought of is why didn't he just go through the drive thru? I'm not excusing the mugger's behavior or saying it's the old man's fault. My point is that he could've better read the situation to possibly prevent being attacked. The video said the time was after 10pm. I would say at the very least, McDonald's should be putting a security guard in there at night or lock up the dining area after 10pm.

Hahaha...I wasn't suggesting you say 'hi' to prevent him from mugging you. What HAS become of us that we're that unfriendly to nod or smile at a stranger? Holy Cow. I don't know where you people live, but I tend to make eye contact and smile or nod at people when it presents itself to me. Should we all go back to caves??? Croikee!!!

Regardless of what the older man could have or should have done, it doesn't change who shoulders the blame. We can all take steps to protect ourselves, and it is wise to do so. However, the blame of a crime is fully on the person violating the law. It doesn't somehow lessen their responsibility for violating the law because someone presented an easier target.

Thanks, I was starting to lose my faith in humanity, or the "civilized animal".
