"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Yes the comments are pretty scary!

I have to say the old man was partly to blame though, IF he had ordered why did he continue to look "at the menu to the left" instead of watching the person to his right?

Heck if I was him, my eyes would not be off the stranger especially someone that looked like a punk.

Then again I believe in watching my back.

I was thinking the same thing! In fact, the old guy looked like he was purposely pretending to not notice the kid. I would have looked him in the eye, knodded my head and say 'good evening!" Sometimes, that's all that it takes to diffuse a mugger.

 blaming the victim? place the blame where it lies - with the fruitcake that went in there with what appears to be the sole purpose of robbing someone. they'll probably catch the suspect beating down little old ladies for their social security check.

Would you walk down a dangerous alley at night by yourself? It's reasonable to expect people to use a litte common sense when it comes to personal safety. I wouldn't say it's necessarily about blame but taking responsability for your own safety. You can't assume that you'll never be a victim of crime because your old or helpless.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Ok, that is completely insane to say that the guy didn't use common sense because he didn't stare down the guy to the right of him. HE WAS IN MCDONALDS! How in God's name is that akin to walking down a dangerous alley at night??? I hope none of us live such a paranoid life that we are on the lookout for muggers while waiting for a burger. It was in no way his fault for getting sucker-punched. unbelievable!

It's the situation that calls for caution. You're in a fast food restaurant all alone, late at night. Another person enters the restaurant. If little alarms don't go off in your head than you're incredibly naive. That's not paranoia - it's using common sense.

I don't think it is fair to blame the victim either. Even if he had been 100% on the alert, the thug could have knocked him out all the same, or used a weapon if he was carrying one. Yes, it is smart to be cautious but lack of caution doesn't lessen the blame of the person commiting the crime who bears full responsibility.

The way to find out if you love someone or not, is by talking to them.

The more you talk to them the more you either hate them or love them.

Precisely. Our society has become way too good at blaming victims and explaining away criminal behavior.

I probably would have glanced at the guy if he walked in, but what difference would that have made? Am I supposed to stare at him and get in a defensive position? I have traveled the world and never been attacked because I use a great deal of common sense with regard to personal safety. I do not, however, want to get to the point that I am perpetually paranoid and on the defensive in normal, everyday situations. I hope that most of us are generally trusting of their fellow human beings.
