An Interview With Ron Paul

...

Q: Most people consider Abe Lincoln to be one of our greatest presidents, if not the greatest president we've ever had. Would you agree with that sentiment and why or why not?

A: No, I don't think he was one of our greatest presidents. I mean, he was determined to fight a bloody civil war, which many have argued could have been avoided. For 1/100 the cost of the war, plus 600 thousand lives, enough money would have been available to buy up all the slaves and free them. So, I don't see that is a good part of our history. Besides, the Civil War was to prove that we had a very, very strong centralized federal government and that's what it did. It rejected the notion that states were a sovereign nation.

The people who disagree want to turn around and say, "Oh, yes, those guys just wanted to protect slavery." But that's just a cop-out if you look at this whole idea of what happened in our country because Lincoln really believed in the centralized state. He was a Hamiltonian type and objected to everything Jefferson wanted.

THe more I have learned about Lincoln the more diminished he has become as a great President.

It sounds to me like Ron Paul is trying to propose a "free market" solution to the problem of slavery. The insinuation being that Lincoln was some kinda big government socialist.

So I wonder, what if the North simply "bought out" all the slaves in the South? What would have happened, given that this "solution" does not actually ban slavery? Southern slave owners would have sold their slaves, presumably at good profit margins, and then turned around and imported more.

Importation of Slaves had already been outlawed for over half a century.

Before being president Lincoln did not support the Federal Govt even having a role over which states did or did not have slaves.

So it might be more accurate to say Abe evolved into a -Big Gov mentality.

I was told once, that arguably, slavery was not as immoral, as enslaving people through wages. After all, the plantations did offer housing, food, and medical, from the cradle to the grave, a much better deal than factory workers were getting at the time, where if you don't work, you don't get paid, and if you have no money, you don't eat, you don't get out of the weather, and you don't get taken care of when you get sick.

Never heard that having the Federal government buying slaves was ever an answer. Ron Paul has some odd ideas.

The freed slaves would then do what with masters who were even richer than before? Poor whites wouldn't have gotten anything more than more competition for jobs so there would still have been a lot friction as was the case for 100 years after the Civil War.

The evidence is pretty strong that Lincoln was gay, just like there's evidence that Jefferson sired children with his slaves. The truth shall set you free.

Pretty stong evidence that's a crock of horse manure. Most that stuff comes from gay activists claiming every famous dead guy was really gay to bolster their cause.

"Since it is virtually impossible to prove a negative, Dr. Tripp's thesis cannot be rejected outright. But given the paucity of hard information adduced by him, and given the abundance of contrary evidence indicating that Lincoln was drawn romantically and sexually to some women, a reasonable conclusion, it seems to me, would be that it is possible but highly unlikely that Abraham Lincoln was "predominantly homosexual"

"In 1999, author and gay activist Larry Kramer claimed that he had uncovered new primary sources which shed fresh light on Lincoln's sexuality. The sources included a hitherto unknown Joshua Speed diary and letters in which Speed writes explicitly about his relationship with Lincoln. These items were supposedly discovered hidden beneath the floorboards of the old store where the two men lived, and are said to reside in a private collection in Davenport, Iowa.[13] Kramer has yet to publish any of this material for critical evaluation, and historian Gabor Boritt, referring to Kramer's documents, wrote, "Almost certainly this is a hoax ... ."

Think about it Steven. How can you prove you're not gay? Once you're dead, it's even more difficult to refute that allegation.

Ya, I've read the same stuff in a longish book by a Lincoln historian (sorry, can't remember the name) - but - you can prolly find the title online at Amazon, then check it out from yer local library. It's been 40+ years since the first printing, IIRC.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Yipper, Lincoln being elected was a big cause of the war. He wasn't all that how history wants him to be remembered. Heck, he only freed the slaves in the states that seperated from the union. If he was such a great man he wouldn't have even run for president, knowing the posible results of his election.
