I got my Employment Auth. Card how do I get a social security number now?

Ok, so I got my Employment Auth. Card today and I am trying to figure out how to get a SS Card? Would I just have to send and fill out the SS-5 application along with a copy of my passport, and a copy of the Employment Auth. card?

I would go in person with your EAD and Passport (marriage cert too if you are the female and have changed your name) as well as the SSN form, if you can.

you have to go in person to your closest SS office to file for your SS card.

Don't worry about the Form SS-5. Take your passport and EAD card and birth certificate if you have one handy.

The amount of time it's going to take to have an SSN assigned and be issued a card is going to depend on how long it takes the SSA office to verify your immigration status. If you are lucky they can do it while you are in the office. Otherwise, it could take another week to a month or more.

If it doesn't verify while you are in the office, ask why it didn't, since your name is allowed to be one letter off and still be considered OK. Then make sure they do the secondary electronic verification and they normally get a response within a week. If that verifies they can process the application. If immigration wants to see a copy of your EAD card, a copy of the front and back of the card is mailed to immigration with Form G-845. Figure on another month for that to come back to the SSA office.
