Hi all,

Just waiting on our interview date, and finalising the I-184 paperwork - have been speaking to my mother-in-law on the telephone, trying to get the affidavit organized, and just wanted to run our figures by you.

My grandfather-in-law earns a pension of $17,280 p.a, and has savings of $90,000 (that we can uncover - there may be a further $30,000) - I'm thinking that this will be enough to meet the guidelines on poverty, but just wanted to check.

He is a widower. The household would be him and myself. There's no one else that would qualify on income alone. Is basing the money on assets going to be a problem when making up for the income shortfall?

The short answers is "No - it shouldn't be a problem."

Sounds like he's got plenty of assets (money/savings); assuming he can document a liquid value of at least $5000+ you should be OK (5x the difference between what he earns vs what is needed).

Thanks a lot, we're just trying to cover all our bases in this very nerve-wracking process.

Well, an interview date has been set for 28th May, and the paperwork has arrived from the USA - have questions to ask the people at the extortion line, but wondered what you folks felt first.

1 - My wife is listed as a dependant on her grandpa's 2009 taxes (and 2007 and 2008), as he paid for her last college credits prior to our marriage, when she was living with him. - she's obviously not going to be a dependent on the next taxes - does this mean that she should be included in his household size for the purposes of the form I-864? Do you think this prejudices things in any way.

2 - My wife's grandfather has $87,000 in the bank, $9,000 of it in checking and the rest in an annuity - along with his pension income, this is what we are basing our income qualification on - will this amount all be eligible?

3 - In 2008, my wife's grandfather included her college tuition fees as a deduction on his taxes, making his Gross Adjusted Income $13,000 for that year - this is substantially lower than in other years, will this in any way prejudice our application, seeing as it was a one-off expense?
