Hello everyone and thanks in advance.

I just want to know in Ghana, is it illegal to mail a passport???

I believe my husband is lying to me when he tells me they took it at fed ex and gave it back to him and said it is illegal. I need it to file my taxes with the w7 form. If he is lying it is over. Does anyone know??

Oh and he had nerve to tell me the police called him or somethin about it.

In the US they get mailed all the time.

May be a high risk in Ghana so not sure about that.

What does the passport have to do with your taxes?

If your having trust issues already it may be time for an evaluation of things!

Ok - You need to have a notarized Copy of the original, not the original. I don't think He is lieing to you - Passport fraud and scamming is very high in Ghana and the current administration is tough on security/scam/frauds, doing all they can to curb the current behaviors to give Ghana back a good name. And I bet that the police are asking him about why he would send away a Ghana passport! It makes me feel better that they are doing something about the high fraud/scamming going on! That is a good sign. The tough part is getting an appointment for the notarization at the US Embassy, which is the only thing the IRS will accept.

I followed a link from another gal on here that ended up filing single and will ammend her taxes once her husband arrives. I was fortunate that I had my son this year and filed head of household, making mention of my married status somewhere buried deep in the form. (I had assistance this year with my taxes.) May I suggest that you file single & ammend your taxes. I susspect that you may have really counted on the deduction, but it may be the best thing to do at this point. Try a search in the forums for taxes. You will not be able to file on time this year waiting for the notarized copy anyway. Hope this was helpful.

I would call FedEx and ask them. I've FedExed my passport all over the place (for visas, replacements, etc.) and never had a problem.

That said, I know of several stories of the FedEx crew in Ghana being a source of lots of scams. My housemate in Ghana received her FedEx package after it had been opened and gone through, a credit card missing.

Hi Dina,

I was checking out your timeline. I couldn't help but notice a "30 week" wait for an interview after your case was completed with NVC? Did they tell you it would take 30 weeks or was it the embassy or consulate?
