Police Certificate

I somehow managed to post this on the wrong board, this is better now.

Hello All....

Just a query - probably best answered by those who have experienced the process - I am just wondering when the best time would be to request Police certificate in view of the potential delay in receiving it from asking...would it be prudent to send for it once NOA2 has been received? - as always looking to try and anticipate anything that may hold the application up....

Thanking you all

Might be up to the individual Consulate, but the Consulate in Rio de Janeiro told me the Police Certificates were valid for one year

It can take up to 40 days, my fiancee's certificate took 39, remember you need police certificate from any country you have lived in for longer than a year.

I am right at the beginning of the process but do you think it would be sensible to apply for a police certificate now to be on the safe side?

And can I double check you only need one for countries lived in for longer than one year? Jon and I met in Germany where I lived for 10 months and I have no idea how to begin obtaining a certificate from another country!!

Sorry I'm being pedantic, I woke up in the middle of the night last night thinking about what we have to do!! I think that might have been a product of too much time spent on this site

I want to make sure we get it all right first time!

Thanks guys.

We are no longer to be married.

One of us couldn't go through with it.

You just submitted your I-129F... it's going to take a while. I'd wait to be sure that your certificate is as current as possible... if there's a significant date gap, they 'might' question whether there have been any additions since the record was printed, even if it is good for a year.

It's really a judgement call at this point.

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

It's not applicable to your situation but it was a useful piece of information for mine, and may be for others, so I'll share: it's a year for any country you've lived in since the age of 16, and six months for your current country of residence and your country of nationality (e.g. if you're British but had only lived in the UK for >6 months but <12 months since the age of 16, you still need the ceritificate from the UK. If you're like me and live in a country other than your own currently, you need a certificate once you have lived there for more than six months, not a year.)

Sorry it's jumbled, I know what I wanted to say, it just didn't come out so smoothly!

Best wishes.

UK Embassy requirements:

If you are 16 years of age or over and were born in the United Kingdom or the UK is your current nationality you will require a police certificate to cover your period of residence of six months or more since reaching the age of sixteen. The period is twelve months for all other nationalities.

And it REALLY does take 40 days, give a take one or 2, to receive one from the UK, just in case that is a question.....

Hello,

I would do it ASAP, as it usually takes up to 40 days to have in your hand. I see you're in the UK-your police cert. will be valid for one year.

It is rather quick & painless to do-go to the local police station-hand over 10 quid, and in 30-40 days-voila !

Good Luck.

I know i am not answering the question posted here but instead i do have another question that has been bugging me. I recently requested from australia a police cert. They had ask me if i wanted a police cert and a fingerprint check or just the police cert alone. It got me confused and thinking....if the statment "police check for each country you have lived in (except the US) for longer than one year since 16 years of age" implies a fingerprint check as well?

Check your Embassy's web site for specific instructions. Not all Embassies have that 1-year rule either....

My fiancee needed australian police check also. We contacted the embassy and they told us to do fingerprint check.

Download the form from this link for australia and call your local police, they will tell you where to go to get the fingerprints and they will mail if for you to australia. It will be mailed directly back to your address.
