I've read conflicting things, and may have been looking at different scenarios without realizing it. But, my wife is going to need a Medical Exam for her CR-1 Visa.

Does she "have" to wait for her interview to be scheduled? Or can she use the available information in her Packet 3 (when she gets it), to schedule an exam.

She graduates from UBC the last week in May. Our NOA2 approval date was April 6, 2010. Ideally, we'd love to get her Packet 3 in time for her to take her Medical exam at the Woking clinic in Vancouver in the 3rd week in May, even though it might be August before she gets an interview in Montreal.

Thoughts?

If you are applying for the CR1 visa you need to have your interview letter to book the medical. CR1 visa applicants do not receive a Package 3 as do K1 visa applicants. When your interview date is set you will receive an email with instructions for the interview and the first pages of this email is required for the medical. I think some of the confusion may be that both CR1 and K1 visa applicants responded in your previous thread.

Ah, ok, thanks for that. We'll just have to plan on my wife arriving in Montreal a week or so early, if she's going to do the Medical right before the interview.

I assume that she can't have the Medical done in the U.S. while visiting me? That seems like it'd be too easy.

 Of course that would be too easy!! and there's nothing easy about this process. If you scan through the Canada forum you will find threads about people that have done the medical and interview in Montreal the same week. Just make sure you plan to give yourself enough time to get your results back. Good luck.

No, she cannot have the medical done in the US. It must be done in Canada by an approved physician. There is, however, one in Vancouver so she does not have to travel to Montreal solely for the medical.

OBX clarified the confusion regarding 'packet 3"

Good luck

Generally you get around 4 weeks notice when Montreal issues you an interview date. So, that should be plenty of time for her to do her medical in advance in Vancouver and then travel to Montreal just for the interview, if that's what she would prefer.

Well, the other complicating factor, is that we're hoping she can visit me here in Austin this summer on vacation. She's just finishing up her Master's and really needs some time to unwind.

We know that crossing the border for an extended visit can be dicey when this kind of stuff is processing, but we'll have all of our paperwork, a return flight for her and the like. I'm not too worried about the border crossing.

But that means that when we get the interview date, she'll be here in the U.S., so she won't be in Vancouver where she could easily get the Medical.

So we'll likely just fly her into Montreal late the week prior so she can get the medical done, and interview that next week.
