Visa Interview

Hi,

I have an I130 (CR1) visa interview in Montreal coming up soon and am wondering if my wife (she is a US Citizen living in the US) should be there with me? I called the consulate and they said she does not have to be there so I planned on going there myself but upon talking to others it sounds like her being there may be a good idea.

What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Montreal is one of the very few consulates which allow the petitioner to be present at the interview. I would say it would really be good if she could be present with you at the interview.

If you read through the Canada forum I think you will see equal numbers of CR1 visa applicants with and without their spouses at the interview (the breakdown may differ for K1 applicants.) Often however, finances, distance and work commitments of the US spouse make the trip difficult. It is not required but if you feel more comfortable then by all means bring your wife. My husband was with me for support and it was wonderful to share that moment when we were approved! Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback! Another question for you - approximately how long after the interview did you receive the paper work required to cross over into the united states for the first POE?

I interviewed on a Tuesday and had my paperwork by that Friday before noon. At the time I was in the Niagara Region of Ontario. I would say you should have it within a week, two tops!
