If you are a USC it shouldn't be an issue. If you are the immigrant then you are supposed to maintain a valid passport from your country of birth as you are not a USC. once you are a USC you are not REQUIRED to retain your countries passport.

I suspect it will be an issue, but I cannot be sure.

Have you been a LPR since the passport expired? Then I don't see an issue with it. Did you file a police report about the lost passport? If yes, then take it with you and I think that should suffice.

Thanks for the responces, to the person above, no im not a citizen (I wouldnt ask a question like that if i was, cuz i would just apply for a new one), but to the 2nd person, yes i am an LPR, since I didnt go anywhere i kinda slacked off in not getting a new passport from my country of birth, and i just decided to apply for citizenship recently, so NO i didnt file a police report.

I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO HEAR FROM PEOPLE WHO ALREADY HAD THEIR INTERVIEWS AND THEY DIDNT HAVE A PASSPORT. THANKS!!!

Tasha23-In answer to your question...

The main reason they ask to see your past/present passports at the citizenship interview, is to compare the travel dates on your N-400 application to the dates in your passport, to verify your trips in/out of the country to determine your eligibility for citizenship.

And if you haven't been anywhere since permanent residency...It shouldn't be too much a problem, as you have met the minimum residency requirements there.....:)

Just explain your situation, provide the paperwork to prove that you lost your passport, and hopefully they will understand from there...

Actually, if it makes you feel any better, I brought my past and present passports to my interview, and needless to say, they didn't want to see it...Oh well, I guess they trusted what I wrote on the N-400 form when I declared the trips there...

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I can tell you with confidence that all you need to do is to state (under oath, remember!) at the interview that you do not have a passport and have not had one in 7 years and have not left the USA since 1998, and you'll be fine.

The only reason they want to see the passport is to see the absence from the US. Without a passport, you can't have left the US and come back. That serves the same purpose: establishing continuous presence in the US since becoming a LPR.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Ha, this is one time I am in full agreement with Justbob, there is no law that states you have to maintain a foreign passport or even a US passport for that matter. You only need one if you want to travel out of this country. And trying to maintain a foreign passport in this country is not easy with only just a couple consulates from that country here.

In that N-400 section where they ask you to list all of your out of country trips exceeding 24 hours, just type, NONE.
