Some leg work by my lovely wife... and we have a winner! Progressive were half the price of Geico.

We have Progressive insurance. When I added my husband and his car to the policy (with a brand-new Texas DL) our premiums actually went down. It's about $95 a month-his car only has liability on it though.

Living in Miami, my car insurance is about 6x what it was when I lived in Wisconsin. But mine, too, will go down when I get married and add the partner (with Geico), or at least that's what they quoted me when I asked a few months ago...

OK, I have didn't read all the responses/experiences but this is what is going on.. All carrier/insurers do "surcharge" the policy holder for so called "inexperience driving" - This surcharge is based on US laws/experience. If you read the policy terms and conditions [ha, like we really do] clearly informed us of the following [paraphrasing]: A surcharge will apply to any driver who has less than 3 years license in the USA "or" less than a year driving in US Territory.

As for me, I asked my wife to obtained an international driver license.. Then, I added her to my policy [Geico, lol] and advise them with my situation. Technically, any new resident has 30 days to obtain a DL, but in our case [K1] documentation takes time and in reality, NY allows us a driver to use his/her international DL for a year with proper proof.. my wife will be working in her NY License just before her year in the states.. Don’t forget, "New Drivers" here [at least in NY] must obtain a driver's permit first before getting the license..

Oddly, when I added my wife, my premiums went down. She had never had a license anywhere before getting a US license. I live in NY and have full collision and comprehensive with $200 deductible (no glass deductible) for only about $50 a month.

Same case for us as well. Premiums went down we were first married (Married people are less likely to have accidents), my wife was just listed on the insurance but not as a rated driver. Now that she has a permit, I switched her to a rated driver and it went down even further (Only about $20 over 6 months).

I'm a bit confused... Were you all adding a Car with the new resident as a Primary Driver?

I ask because I have Geico, and I added Kyle as a "non-driver" and our bill went up only 12 dollars a year because my status changed (from single to married). I then asked about what happens when he does get a license (he only had a motorcycle learners from the UK), and they said as long as I was listed as the primary driver, and not him, our rates would not change, and they would just change his status to a secondary driver...

They even suggested that when I went to add another car, to just list me as the primary driver and we would get quoted the best rates because the quote wouldn't be based on his points/rating...

Has anyone else been told this? I ask because Kyle is going for his driving test today for his license!!! :)

Contrary to popular believe [if you read policy terms and conditions] carriers [All] have the right to surcharge policy for inexperience operators [around 20%], moving violations [some times, depending on the carrier, first minor violation is wave], commuting to work, etc, etc..

To Clarify a couple other things [posted before].

If you are a single Male under , a surcharge is applied

Marry Male under 25, no surcharge

and other cases and carriers are different.. I got a $12 credit when I added my wife and I am 38 with many years of experience and so far have keep my DL clean for a couple of year [lol]

Adding your spouse to the policy means, she is legally protected by the carrier as an insured whether or not is a "non-driver" but carriers know that non-drivers do drive their spouses cars [unless they are not license].

The moment the spouse gets a DL, expect a surcharge with no warnings.. it is written on the jacket policy.

I had GEICO since 1998 and switched to Liberty Mutual last month after I found out how much money I would save with them. Not only did my car insurance go down by over $60 a year, my home insurance was almost $500 less. I talked to Geico/Travelers (renter's insurance) about this and neither one of them would budge. So they lost a client who'd been with them for over 12 years.

I actually switched to Geico from AAA because of my wife. I was paying 85 a month with AAA and that would have spiked to nearly 200. Geico is about 120 for us, the cheapest around.

Mind you we have only one car and I was able to list her as driving the car 10% of the time. We may need a second car soon but it would be nice to continue this way for another 18 months or so when she's licensed 3 years here.

Did Kyle pass his test?

In my situation, we have 2 cars, I am primary on a rather aged shaky 2001 Sebring that looks the mutts nutts with the roof down :) and C is primary on hers.

He did. :) He couldn't believe how much easier it was to pass compared to the UK driving test!

As someone who had Geico insurance and had to file a claim I would absolutely not recommend them.

We were involved in a collision where the at-fault driver was a kid insured by some other company. Even though it was being claimed against his insurance, we still had to file through Geico and they were just bloody awful.

We called them immediately after the accident occurred to report the accident and get a tow truck but they left us stranded on the freeway on a 100 degree day saying they could not get a tow truck out to us and there was nothing they could do to help.

Later on when we called back to continue the claim we discovered none of the details from our first call had been entered into the computer system so we had to start from scratch.

Their policy stated that although we were not at fault we still had to pay our deductible up front and then we would be reimbursed later. Later meant 7 months later.

It took Geico days before they could get an insurance adjuster out to look at the vehicle, and even longer to finally get the pay out (it was written off and we knew it right when the accident occurred)

9 months later they still owe us money.

Needless to say we are no longer with them and will never insure with them ever again.

Not sure if this has been covered before, tried a search and didn't see it...

My wife and I have just got into a big row with Geico over a policy they have when covering new resident drivers. This is the first I have heard of this so I am not sure if it is new or whether it was "buried" in the small print and we missed it, or whether we've been taken for a ride...

Our monthly renewal came in, for both of us, and it was more than a car payment a month in itself, so we called them and their policy is, for new drivers, they jack the premium as if the license had points. It doesn't matter how many years of driving somewhere else you may have had, they adjust the premium as if you were a new driver and just got 2 points. These 2 points doubled the premium.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Hubby bought a car for me and i was added up in his geico insurance. He got a discount for multiple cars. I think i was only added as additional driver. Only my hubby's name was showing in the car insurance card. After we got married and I received my Drivers license (after GC, of couse), he called up geico to update my file. He received additional discount for being married. And our car insurance now shows both our names for our 2 cars.
