Hi,

Just got the naturalization interview for my wife. However she has tickets to go on vacation soon after that appointment. Is it possible to postpone the oath taking in case the date for the oath is inside the vacation time? Of course, provided she passes, knock on wood :)

Thanks!

In my case, I was given options and I picked a date that suited me, it was 2 months after my interview. This was in Connecticut, I'm not sure if it works the same way everywhere. I think you will be ok.

Just a comment.... sometimes they ask if you wish to take the oath on the same day.... just keep in mind that once the oath is taken, you become a USC and your wife will then need a US passport to travel in and out of the US....

Your wife should mention at the interview that she will be out of the country from such and such date to such and such date and would like to have the oath ceremony after those dates. There won't be any problem. When it is time for the oath ceremony, she will just update her physical presence history by providing the dates she was out of the country on the form they will send her and will need to bring her passport as evidence.

It will probably be easier for her to turn down the same day oath ceremony if it is offered to her as she would need to get a US passport in order to travel back to the US after her trip and that will add a whole dimension of worry about whether it will arrive in time. There is no problem with delaying an oath ceremony so that she can fully enjoy the experience without having to worry.

Most people will suggest that only postpone the oath if you absolutely have to. Yes you could get a re-schedual in a short time (few months) or as many have found out longer, or even been lost back into the system. Golden Rule that people should always pay attention to, is that if you file your N-400, make sure you have nothing planned for the next 6 months to be safe. Do not book trips or anything if you know you are filing for the N-400 and visa versa...
