Being citizens of both countries?

Yep there is nothing wrong with that at all just as long he has his US citizenship when you decide to move. Many people get both. There's really no downside to doing it other then you could be summoned for jury duty and you still have to declare taxes outside of the US, and maybe if you are in the age range, possible to have military duty (which hasn't happened since Vietnam).

I've had both for a number of years now and have both passports...

Well the selective service only goes until 25 I think, and Kyle will be 24 this year, so we don't have too much longer to deal with that. You still have to file your taxes, though? That's a bummer. :(

I don't think it's looked on too favourably a USC being anything but a USC.

As a Canadian I remember during the oath ceremony when I was naturalized swearing I had

"no allegience to any foriegn power".

And I knew a lady who had some grief as a USC moving back to the US after a few year stay in Canada because she had a part time government job for the Park Service and had to say some kind of oath about the Queen!?

I'm a Canadian citizen and will keep mine. I will consider naturalization to the USA. I know a colleague of mine just recently became a Cnd citizen from Sweden and she had to swear an Oath to the Queen and her Heirs and Supporters. A bit silly if you ask me. I know the Queen is still our head of state but she's mostly just a figure head and really has no political power in Canada. But we're still connected by fantasy or something haha

Just Bob......

Lol..They already took away my green card.....(that was cruel enough already, especially since I paid so much for and waited so long for the card)

By no means are they taking away any my naturalization certificates and/or passports!

They cannot take what does not belong to them, issued from other countries.....

If I want to give up citizenship to any other country..fine, that is of my own choosing...not up to the US government to decide that! It's like another country taking away US-issued documents...

Lol..Let's just say there will be world war III if that happens!

Besides, the USCIS has better things to do and needs to be more competent in other ways....

Really...

Ant

It's not about you or any other person in particular.

It's a general statement in regard what the US government COULD do if they wanted to. They could demand that naturalized citizens give up their "old" citizenship and if they don't comply, would strip the newly coined citizen of his or her US citizenship. All it takes to write this into law is one signature on an excecutive order. Keep in mind that there are MANY countries that do not allow more than one citizenship.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Doesn't it say they can/will take your US citizenship away if you don't give up any other citizenship within a year of becoming a naturalized US citizen?

Of course they are not taking away your canadian or any other citizenship!

In either event, I have never heard of something like this happening. Kinda funny actually that as a german citizen you have to apply to keep your german citizenship if you become i.e. a US citizen but then the US could take away your US citizenship if you do that.

Why does it have to be so complicated? LOL

But thanks for the informative read about your process!!!

Every country handles this differently. Some countries do not even acknowledge other citizenships (i.e., Great Britain), others don't care (i.e., Canada), and some don't allow it at all (i.e. India).

In regard to Germany, I don't care about the application, I don't care about the fees. What bugs me is that the BBG process requires a totally fabricated reason in order to get approved. The whole USCIS shabang was easier for me than the BBG application.

I had to find a job that requires US citizenship. I then had to pretend I wanted to move to that God-forsaken place in order to take it. Then I had to create my qualification and job history for it. And that then got approved. No normal reason is good enough; in fact 95% of all applications are like mine: a job waiting that requires US citizenship (and, to some degree often implied, security clearance). Tell 'em you live in the US for 15 years, have two children that are US citizen, would like to vote, and they deny your application outright.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . This is true.

And, since it's true, its application is like the sword of Damaclos. At ANY TIME in the future, this executive order could be signed. Most likely it will grandfather in all those who already have dual citizenship, but for newly naturalized citizens it could mean the end of dual citizenship.

It's rather a no-brainer to become a USC if you can keep your previous citizenship(s), but my guess is that if people had to choose between their original citizenship and the US one, the decision wouldn't be as easy, now, would it.

If we think about this in a rational manner, it's in fact difficult to be loyal to two countries at the same time. It works until a decision has to be made. If the US, THE single most war-loving-and-engaging country in the World, were to raise war against your "old" country, were you willing to throw a bomb over your parents' and friends' old houses?

You can't really answer this until the time comes. If you have two favorite at American Idol, and like them both very much, and they both get into the final, you'll have to make a decision. That's the same with dual citizenship, and for that reason, it's a very gray gray zone.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . .
