I just went to the site about the WIC program.Their Income levels are 185% ,we only need to be 125% for the visa(K1) so would we get WIC?

I'm really sorry to say, but I feel that if you have to sign the affadavit of support, that should mean that you shouldn't be eligible for WIC...kinda defeats the point imo. The WIC & support levels should be the same.

I really don't mean to sound harsh at all...just giving my opinion!

I didn't think you were being harsh.

Jim makes 13.75$ an hour,he's working his butt of as a Helicopter Mechanic and gets a VA check of 300$ yet we will NOT meet the 185% guideline for WIC.

I have no clue when I can start a job here due to me having a 5 year old son with a bad case of ADHD and not knowing when I will get my EAD.

Jim has no kids of his own and wants at least one,I simply want to know if we could even afford having a baby later on down the road.

I'm from Germany and having always been a single mother ,(you can't really go to work in Germany with a child under 3 years of age because they dont have Day Care like here,Day Care starts when the Child is 3)with a child that has a medical condition and needs therapy 2 times a week and is already on Ritalin,I got lots of benefits.

EVERYBODY in Germany gets 550$ a months for the first 6 months after you had a baby, that continues for three years until the child is 3 depending on your income.

So you see there is a huge difference between Germany and the US.And I simply wanted to see how it could work here.

But even if we for one reason or another can't get WIC we will one day have a baby.

I think you're misinterpreting the law about WIC. It's not that you need to make 185% of the poverty line to qualify; you need to make *less*. WIC is an excellent program; I have personally long felt that food stamps should be done exactly the same way.

Anyway, plenty of working families who are not on welfare nevertheless qualify for WIC. I'm with mdyoung's suspicion in the other thread that you'd be okay to get WIC, as WIC is meant to supplement, not replace, an actual income. As well, your children, should you choose to have them, will be American citizens and thus entitled to those benefits.

Thanks a lot Pax!!!!!!!!!!! I really dont come to the US to get any benefits or stuff like that,I just thought I'd find out about all that stuff before we have a baby,so we know and dont have to worry about it later.

Had a complicated pregnancy with my son and if the next one turns out like that too then I wont feel like gathering info then.

And as far as the Citizenship goes,

my children will definitley get the US Citizenship and my son and I will get it too as soon as we can get it.

That at least frees Jim off the I 134 and I 864 then.

Again,thanks for your advice.

Just so you know, any children you have on American soil, or any children at all that you have with your USC husband, are American citizens from birth. You don't need to do anything special at all if they're born here; someone better-informed than I can tell you the requirements for reporting the birth of an American citizen if he or she is born abroad.

And I certainly don't think, and I'm sure no one else here thinks, that you'd bother to come all the way to the States just for some free peanut butter and eggs. ;) WIC is a great program and, as I said earlier, it's meant to temporarily supplement a household's food budget, not indefinitely replace it. It's a great investment in children, like Head Start and aid under the Higher Education Act--other programs that are NOT considered means-tested public benefits for purposes of the I-864.

just to reiterate, WIC is not the same as welfare. it's to ensure that kids have all the food and nutrients that they need to grow up. i know a couple of families who applied for WIC even if they both have an income.

Lots of working families get WIC - it's not like welfare at all - and not a means tested benefit (as Pax said earlier). A few working moms I know here get WIC - they work full time and the father is active duty military - and I know it really helps them to have all that formula provided :)

I'm a social worker and I definitely feel WIC is a viable option for many working families. Formula, especially the specialty kinds, can be extremely expensive and very taxing on a typical working family. As many people have said, WIC is a nutritional supplement for pregnant women, infants, and children and I don't think anyone should feel ashamed about applying for it- that is what it is there for.

See my timeline for all previous dates!
