My fiancee and I talk twice a day on weekdays, once while she's on the bus in the morning and then again at night before bed, more on weekends. I use Vonage which gives me free calls to her land line for the nighttime calls and the cell phone calls in the morning were $0.12/min. . We've also been known to stay on the phone for more than 12 hours straight on a weekend day. We average around 2000 minutes/month of phone time plus emails during the workday and the occasional chat on Facebook, if we're both logged on. My monthly bill is usually around $100, of which $54 is my normal, fixed rate service (2 lines.) Now that the rate to cell phones has dropped to $0.05/min, I expect my bill to drop to the $70-$80/mo range.

I also have a re-loadable PIN phone card account that I use as a backup for me and as something she (or I) can use from Colombia (they have a free 800 access number in Colombia). I think that is just under $0.05/min to (Colombian) cell phones and $0.02/min to the land lines (Colombian and US) and US cell phones. With international calling, I think it's always best to have a couple alternative routes available because I find that sometimes the Vonage network can't complete a call but the phone card can, or vice versa.

I should say that in ALL cases, it is cheaper for me to call her from the USA than it is for me to call her cell phone to cell phone while I'm in Colombia (same cell provider). Calls between Colombian cell phones from different providers are ridiculously expensive (think $16 for 38 minutes.)

Wonder if i should change to Vonage.

Currently I call through my cell and home phone by calling a Reliance Global Call number and then wife's India number. Cost is $1.99 a minute.

I use up about $100 a month just on talking on the phone. Luckily though we use the internet/webcam quite a bit too.

I use Airtell Call Home North Plan for Punjab Area, and Vonage. I talk to my wife 3x a day. Once she wakes up, once she goes to sleep, and once i wake up. She wakes up and i go to sleep. I pay $34 for Airtell for 2400 minutes, and Vonage at home.

hmm lets see... we chat every day via MSN/Txt message (MSN on my end, comes in as a txt message on her end), and we talk every other night or so on the phone.... and most phone calls are 45-120 minutes long. No internet available for her, and no land line, so no cheap skype or vonage. I defiantely second what Ryna said about having multiple avenues to call with. My primary phone service is a CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP prepay calling card at 8.5 cents a minute (setup to automatically reload the balance when it gets low), but if that doesn't work I can use google voice at 16 cents a minute.... and she has SIM cards from a few different providers down there in case one is not working.

All told, I would say I spend $80/mo on phone bills, plus another $10 in direct text messages.

Add in yearly trip costs of $5000 and packages sent down there... and it comes out to around $500/month, not including whatever she spends on txt messages.

It costs me about 200 dollars a month for my cell fone bill, the rest is either talking on yahoo messenger or when my wife calls me. I wanted to get my wife a landline for her apartment so I could sign up for an international call plan were you get like a thousand minutes for only $20.00 a month, but like usual nothing seems to be easy to accomplish in the philippines and its to much trouble neither of us can afford the time it would take to go thru watever u have to go through so we just stick to what weve been doing calling eachother on the cell fone.

Very similar story to mine.....except I use magic jack......and calls on her cell in usa. (we have 5 our choice of no. free when we call that no. or we receive call from that no. in our cell phone plan)

Haha what a question !

I use two services, one on my cell phone and one at home. The one on my cell phone charges by the minute, and in the past has cost as much as $50 in one month.

At home I primarily use Vonage to call India and spend only about $32 per month on that. I heard of a new promo offer from Vonage, so I will try to call and get a lower price. :-)

We usually talk twice a day - once when she wakes up and I am going to bed, and again when I wake up and she is going to bed.

We very rarely talk on email or use text chatting, it is usually on the phone.

Is there any problem giving her magic jack? I ask because Magic Jack is likely not registered in the name of the foreign beneficiary, it is in the name of the US Petitioner. So when you submit phone records they will see you are calling a phone that is not registered under the beneficiary's name.

I'm not sure if this is an issue or not, but just something I have been thinking about.

I gave my wife magic jack too - but for some technical reasons it froze her computer, so she gives me missed calls and I call her back.

If it's registered in the name of foreign beneficiary than it's okay......actually she can buy and use it for her own purpose......so there's nothing wrong in it..........
