Wonder if i should change to Vonage.

Currently I call through my cell and home phone by calling a Reliance Global Call number and then wife's India number. Cost is $1.99 a minute.

I use up about $100 a month just on talking on the phone. Luckily though we use the internet/webcam quite a bit too.

R u seriously paying that much for ur calls..reliance has a deal of 2 cents a minute buddy. Should check out vonage as it is much much cheaper for us calling india. $32-34 per month all you wanna talk. No limits :D

To use magic jack you need the following:

1. A computer with internet conneciton (DSL/Cable/T1 ect...). This mean that you're most likely use magic jack at home or a place where you can hook your laptop/desktop to the internet.

2. Magic jack connect to the computer. You'll have a local number. You can take magic jack where ever you go (national/international) and you'll still have this local number and you can make/receive calls to this number and it's like a local call.

Hope that help.

Magic Jack device costs $20 and yearly you pay $20 unlimited calls from anywhere in the world to U.S/Canada number.

The source side must have a faster internet connection (DSL/Cable etc.) and the destination can be any phone#.

We use it and it is very clear. Only problem with this is - it is not phone to phone. The source side person must be in the internet to make or receive calls.

My wife and I talk text whenever we feel like getting in touch. We don't have a set time of calling or texting. There are days when we might send 10 texts or days when there are no text at all. We also call each other sparingly. The literal night and day difference between where we reside isn't conducive to proper or frequent communication.

TheJesal, if you are really paying $1.99 a minute, you're paying way too much. Calling India should cost you no more than 3 cents a minutes. There are some great ideas in this thread. Alternatively, you can use Rebtel.com to call anywhere in India for 1.8 cents. Once you set up your account and register your phone, you can call your receiver from your phone just as you'd call your next door neighbor.

Seriously, man! I can't believe you really pay $1.99 for a minute of call. Unless you're using satelite phone, it shouldn't cost this much to call anywhere in the world.

Oh yikes guess i forgot to update this thread.

I switched to Vonage few months ago and it has been perfect for us!

Plan to keep it even when the wife is here. Figured she will be calling her parents often anyways.

I have the skype app installed on my iPhone and make calls over 3G. The unlimited calling plan to Ireland costs me about $10/month.

iPhone 3GS: $200

AT&T Voice: $50

AT&T Data: $30

Skype: $10

Intl Text: $10

So initial setup cost me $200 and the monthly is about $100. But even if my wife was living here with me I would be paying for the same thing(change intl text plan to domestic) minus Skype. So really it only costs me $10. I use the 3G data network to make skype calls so it doesn't use any of my mobile minutes.

Once she moves over, her iPhone will have skype so she can talk to her parents back home.

OK this seems like a thread for me.

At first, 2 years ago, we online typed and used cams online. I called him ALOT and my landline and cell bills were totaling about $1000 a month.

Then we started using voice chats on yahoo and msn messengers... totally free!

Of course we still use the phone some and I buy cards online at pingo.com. Jordan is 12 cents a min (compared to 70 on my home or cell phone). I can use the cards with the access number on my home or cell phone now. I spend less than $50 a month now because we stay online so much. We even leave the messenger calls open all night and sleep together almost every night! We chat online at least 2 hours every morning and about an hour every night before we sleep.

During the day, we text. His is free from his employer. I use an AT&T gophone for pay as you go service and buy 1000 texts at time for $9.99. Sometimes I buy 3000 a month, but cheaper than .20 a text!

I have been paying about $420.00 a month in phone card bills since June 2008 (and that's with a 16% discount from the online calling card provider!)

I use Zaptel.com and it costs me about 11.5 cents a minute to call a Lagos mobile phone (which is what my husband has).

We talk an average of 2 hours a day during the week and about 2.5 to 3 hours a day on weekends (we have a lot to talk about! lol)

I've made 5 trips to Nigeria so far since November 2008 (I plan to fly there again for the interview). Averaged out airfare cost per trip is about $1200.00 for a round trip ticket. Hotel stays and food - an additional 1200.00 for each trip (I paid). And also I am financing his flight here when he gets his visa (God willing).

Not to mention the money I've spent on fees and applications for 2 petitions (we had previously applied for and were denied the K1 visa) and also money for a crooked lawyer the first time around (16,000 dollars!).

I try not to think about it too much and look at it as an investment that will hopefully pay off in the long run.

So now you can all feel a bit better about what ya'll are spending....just think of me when you're feeling stretched!

I am not sure how much my wife spends on calling cards. Because she is the one that calls me the most. I prefer to talk on Yahoo, or Skype video. One because it is cheaper like (FREE) But since we can't be near a computer all the time to chat online. We rely on text messages on our phones through the day and night. Which is funny, because I am always having to remind her about the time difference.

One time I told her to call me at 9pm and she though I was telling her to call me at 9pm her time. Which you can all guess I was sleeping at that time.

I think I spend on intl. text about 10 to 15 dollars a month.

I can really relate to what you are saying!

We filed a K1 first too with a really bad attorney. I paid him over $3000 before I found VJ and fired him. I only made one trip during the K1 process, but the trip for the interview this month will be my 3rd since we changed to CR1 in Oct 2009. My flights are about $1200 each, too. And this is the 4th trip total! And praying we FIANLLY get to buy his ticket this time ( which I have priced already and its almost as much as my round trip!).

We rent an apartment when I am there that runs about $100-$150 a week (depending on season). I have stayed a total of 11 weeks so far and the interview trip will add 4 more to that.

WOW! We have spent a lot!

I just looked at the one I use (pingo.com). It's .75 or .85 a min.

They don't charge any connection fees but you will pay $1.00 a month to use it It's not bad compared to some I looked at when I started buying them.

Hi everyone,

Well, i used skype for free, since it s from my computer to hers.

Plus, in France, most of the internet company offers you unlimited calls towards a lot a countries (like United States) for free. so, basically, it costs me only 40 $ a month (30 €), the price of my internet contract, to get in touch with my wife.

I ll say that i talk to my wife, about 1 hour everyday (2 hours/day in the week end)
