That's already been the law under the Family Leave Act during the Clinton years. There's not a lot of controversy on it as it is unpaid leave.

Plus, many workers aren't eligible for it (something like 40%), and it's only 12 weeks.

I think all mothers should smoke and drink during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Preferably at least a pack a day, and a fifth of bourbon. It improves the quality and the taste of the milk.

But hey Obama the Socialist is here now to fix it all so let him know.

good.gif This is a step in the right direction...

Part of the Healthcare Bill:

The legislation would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to require that employers provide unpaid breaks for employees to express breast milk. The legislation would also require that employers provide a private location for employees to have these breaks.

The measure applies to businesses with 50 or more employees.

this has been the law in oregon for over 2 years, and somehow we've managed not to crumble under the exhaustive, oppressive wave of socialistic socialismness in that time.

1. Effective January 1, 2008, employers with 25 or more employees must make reasonable efforts to provide private space and time for nursing mothers who request a place to express milk for their newborns 18 months of age and younger.

2. The location must be in close proximity to the employee’s work area, and cannot be a toilet stall or restroom.

3. Businesses would not necessarily have to have a dedicated lactation room. A vacant office or conference room could suffice, so long as it is private. A cubicle is not considered private.

4. An employee must provide reasonable written or verbal notice to her employer that she intends to express breastmilk at work. A sample letter is available in English and Spanish, see below.

5. All employers must comply unless they can prove it would cause undue hardship.

6. There is a $1,000 fine per incident for non-compliance.

doesn't sound too repressive for an employer really...

but then there are loads of people out there who truly believe that no one should give birth under any circumstances unless they have enough cash in the bank to provide for that child on up to their 18th birthday, as well as the cash on hand to cover their ivy league education. all of this should be sitting in the bank account before one even thinks about getting knocked up. anything less means you are complete scum, entirely dependent on the government to take care of you.

Funny how all the protesters seem to just not see that sort of thing...

If I recall correctly, the sky was predicted to fall when a minimum wage was put into law years ago... and again every time its slated to be increased... and now again with the health care bill...

oregon has plenty of problems-many of which are government related, and the reliance on forcing people to fork over more of their cash with no accountability by the state is definitely a problem here. but requiring employers to give their lactating employees a few more unpaid breaks to pump is not what's causing the problems. but the instant spastic reaction is always, "omg, if you have to make yr employer give you pumping time, then you have no business giving birth in the first place, you f-ing government leech! women should breastfeed, and if they have to work when they're supposed to be breastfeeding, then they're a parasite in the first place for expecting to be able to be mothers and work. those stupid selfish women want it all, blah blah blah." it's pure knee-jerk hysterics, and completely baseless.

and lol @ the fact that we both have gun avatars, and baby signatures...
