I've seen some threads about the magic jack here. Recently someone asked me about it and offered to give me one. I'm curious how it works with international calling. Do you have to call computer to computer, or can you call cell phones and such. Does your computer always have to be on to receive calls? Whats the deal with the magic jacks?

I use it every day to call home (I'm in Morocco).. Basically what you'd do is buy one there in America, set it up on your computer and it will assign a local American number to the Magic Jack- then you send it to your SO overseas, and they plug it into their computer, and it gives them a US number, so they can dial on it just like they were in America. They'd just plug it in to the USB, the software intalls itself, then they plug a regular house phone into the magic jack, and they can dial any American number for free (Well, $9.99 a year). It should be noted, however, that Maroc Telecom's internet service, Menara, blocks the Magic Jack and you have to install a program that masks the IP. There is a link to such a program in this post http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/240753-majic-jack/page__view__findpost__p__3695435 . I use it this program, it was free and easy to install, and it works. It's saved me a fortune to call home, and as long as the computer is on, people can call me here too :D

We bought one and sent it to my husbands family in Casablanca. When we were in Morocco last month I used it everyday to call

my kids back here in the states. The only requirement is high speed internet. It won't work with dial up.
