Being hit up for a GC marriage!

Okay, this has happened to me TWICE and also to several of my other female-friends.

Foreign person approaches you while you're at on WalMart/a cafe/shopping/etc., makes a bit of small talk before launching into how he wants to date you and you should really marry him. Isn't deterred by the whole "I'm MARRIED!" thing. One friend had a guy that actually tried to kiss her.

The second time this happened to me, I pointed out that the guy should really approach this like a business transaction & state that he needs a GC & is willing to pay the woman money to marry him. A couple thousand, at least. But he didn't speak English very well so I don't think he understood what I was saying.

Has this happened to anyone else? It's so bizarre! Do they really think that basically asking a woman to marry them within two minutes of talking is going to work?

Yes.

I know it happens overseas quite a bit. Tour guides specifically tell women to ignore any advances that men in certain countries may make towards them. But I was always the under the impression that these men at least try to woo their perspective greencards before popping the question.

Someone offered me a great deal of money (well above the average annual US income) to marry his cousin and not Thuy.. He almost got hit in the face... I realized that it was not personal and was accepted in his circles... I wouldn't trade every penny in the world for spending the rest of my life with Thuy...

Do these people not understand the fines and prison sentences associated with this type of thing?

it's strictly business for these guys. no thought other than that enters their minds.

I had something similar happen to me once. I used to take the bus to the university and this old guy who takes the same route started chatting with me one day. He seemed nice enough to chat with on my 2 hour commute everyday, and soon we became pretty good friends. A few weeks later, he started telling me about his son who lived back home and how I am the perfect match for him. I just laughed it off not knowing he was serious. About a month later, I found out that the old man was here on a B2 visiting some relatives and was hoping to score a greencard for his son. Never saw him again after I informed him that I was not a US Citizen..

At least you had a relationship with this guy, as little as it was! First time this happened to me, it was like:

(sitting on bench at wallyworld because I locked my keys in my car yet again)

"Hi. How are you?"

"...fine...you?"

"Good. You want date?"

"What?"

"Maybe marry me?"

"I am married..."

"That's okay. You marry me, maybe we go out?"

I knew what the guy wanted but people not familiar with immigration (like my friends) just thought that the guy was crazy. Really, they are approaching this all wrong!

A lot of really dumb and desperate women out there... they'd marry a goat if he said "I love you".

I did feel kinda shitty. Like...do I look that sad/pathetic/ugly/desperate? (Never mind that I'm wearing my wedding rings.) But then one of my very good looking friends also had this happen so I felt better. :)

This happened to my best friend when she was in the military many years back (1994)... She was stationed in South Korea and at the time there were thousands of men from Hong Kong who wanted to get out before the Chinese takeover so they could move large amounts of $$$ out of Hong Kong. She was approached by several men in nice suits who represented rich bankers who wanted a GC to get out of Hong Kong. They were offering yearly stipend of $25,000 a year for the first 2 years, then a balloon payment of $100,000 after the 10 year GC was received, Plus travel and legal expenses....

She admitted that she was tempted, however the military and consulate was on to the scam and there were 2 women GI's who were prosecuted by court martial that year for accepting the offer so of course she said no...

Unfortunately true.....But don't forget, there's just as many dumb and desperate men as well!

"There's this idea called the soul mate principle. It says that every person has one soul mate out there, just one. And that person is perfect for you and is your destiny. The problem being that almost nobody ever finds their soul mate, just because of distance. So most people go through their whole lives feeling not complete"

No, but maybe it's a female thing and I'm male. I never had any foreign women offer me that deal so maybe I should be insulted.

It could be the widespread perception in some countries that Western women have loose morals and will be open to various outlandish propositions. Our TV shows and movies give some odd impressions to some folks abroad.

ScottThuy posted about his experience, although it didn't happen in the US.

I do actually agree with your second statement. (This is where I pass out & die.) It's just so weird. My friends are mostly women, the vast majority of my nursing school is comprised of women...I know a LOT of women and can't imagine even one accepting such an offer as was proposed. It just boggles my mind.

Could you please tell us exactly what city, and exactly which WalMart this happens in? I've some Fed Buddies to call, give them some heads up.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
