Hi 7 months ago i was denied entry into the USA due to lack of ties to Canada. I have visited since but have been sent to secondary inspection before being let through (and given a I-94 with a 20 day visa). What kind of problems would i face if I attempted to attain a F1 visa at the POE?

Not something that you can ask for at the POE.

It shouldn't be an issue with the F-1; however, make sure you have strong ties to Canada. For being already denied for not having them, applying for a long term non-immigrant visa will certainly need proof that you intend to return to Canada. I was asked for them at the POE when I got my F-1 (and I didn't have a denial of entry at that time - lucky me that came years later). I was able to show proof of property I had in Canada, family ties, bank accounts etc.

Good luck.

OP seems to be asking about requesting the F1 at the POE, not about crossing with F1 in hand.

I understand, my post is still valid to her situation. When requesting a non-immigrant visa at a POE, she should be expected to produce ties to Canada, especially after a past denial into the US for not having them.

OP - Good luck

I am aware of the process of obtaining an F-1 visa, when i say POE i am referring to the questioning upon entry with the i20 in hand.

I currently have a job with my employer; but would have to quit if i went. Other than that my ties are very limited as i am only 22. What kind of stuff can i do to show ties?

What about bank accounts? Affidavit's from family showing your intent to return? Do you plan on taking Canadian student loans (if you are, that is a tie to Canada)? I had a volunteer organization write me a letter informing them of my intent to return to re-join the organization. What about a letter from your employer saying you're welcome back there after your schooling is finished?

Have you already been accepted to a school in the US?

Good luck

I will be obtaining a loan from Ontario, and want to ask my employer for a letter which states that I will/can work after my studies. I hope that will be sufficient. The school is in the Atlanta region and yes they have given me a conditional acceptance. I am going for a masters program; do the border officers question where i obtained my bachelors?

I had a whole packet when I went to the POE with my I-20. Part of the packet was a photocopy of my bacheor's degree. They looked at it but I'm not sure how much weight they put behind it.

They can and will ask you anything. Some have an easy time but others (like myself) had a difficult time with it. Leave LOTS of time when going through the POE. My brother-in-law didn't and missed his flight

Good luck.
