Marriage Certificate issued in Nevada

We just received our marriage certificate issued by the Clark County of Nevada. We live in Seattle, WA and I understand laws vary from one state to the other. I got so concerned about the name change because some VJ members said there is a section in their marriage certificate application where they were asked about the name they would want to use after marriage but as far as I can recall, there wasn't any in the forms that I filled out. I called up the WA Federal Bureau and according to them it depends on the wife if she wants to change her last name to that of her husbands. Thus technically IF the wife decides to do so she will just have to IMMEDIATELY change her name WITHOUT reporting it to the courts. I asked about the legalities of the said move, but the clerk added, unless I change my name literally, totally deviating from my birth name then thats the name they would ask for a court ordeal on the matter.

Indeed if that is correct, I just want to clarify again.. If ---Sharon Mae Hanson Stone---- marries ---Michael Douglas Fox--- Based on traditions and legal means, without papers, she can have her married name as "Sharon Mae Stone Fox." Im sorry for repeating it again.. I am just totally confused because in some states a court decree is really necessary.

Anyone from Washington State / Seattle who did the same thing? Your objective views are highly appreciated as we are about to submit our I485 application next week.

Lastly, in your AOS documents did you use your married names already? What about the names in your passports? Did you change it to your married names?

Happy Easter Guys.

That's precisely what I've done.

Lastly, in your AOS documents did you use your married names already? What about the names in your passports? Did you change it to your married names?

Of course, I've been using my new name since I got married. I have three first names though. I'm just very grateful to the USCIS because in everything that they sent to me, all of those papers have my correct complete name.

My passport still bears my old name but that has never been an issue.

May you and your husband have a fast and smooth AOS journey.

I was married in California, and the marriage licence application we filled in had a section for what I wanted my new name to be, both middle and last name. I am not sure what action to take if that is not on the form you filled in. I mean, my marriage licence is the only thin I can use to change my name on my passport, SSN, credit cards etc.

I used my married name when I filled in my AOS paperwork, since that is my legal name now. If you don't, it will be in your maiden name, and you would need to change your name on your green card when you get it, at a cost.

My name on my passport is still in my maiden name, I will be changing it though, once I do a legal name change back in Australia.

Did you not have to sign your marriage license when you got married? That should be the place where you sign with the name you intend to use after you're married. That's what we had to do in Michigan. When we applied for the license to get married, it was all typed up in my maiden name, but when we got married, I had to sign it with my married name. I sent out AOS package in my married name.

This is a good example of how states can be so different. In California, or at least, in Los Angeles County, I signed the marriage licence when we applied for it in my maiden name, but down the bottom, it already had what my new name was going to be. At our actual wedding, we did not sign the licence again, only our witnesses and the minister. It sound weird, but the licence you get in LA/California is both the licence and the certificate.

I just put my married name on my AOS paperwork.

I was wondering this myself, but I guess since I only changed my last name, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

same here in sacramento, ca.

to elaborate: in the marriage license application, you have the first part to write each others name and at the bottom is a portion to be filled at what name you want to appear after you are married (pertaining to the bride)... so i wrote the name i wanted to use, and even eliminated my other first name.

i haven't had any trouble with my new name. got my ead, ap and ssn bearing it and am down to the last one on tuesday (april 6) for the GC. hope alls well too. B-) My passport is still in my maiden name. i have less use of it because i already i have my state ID issued in my new name.

i hope u have it sorted and it will appear on your new legal papers exactly the way u wanted it since the mariage lic application didn't give you that option.

So I'm confused. Did you take your husband's last name, and did it appear that way on the certified marriage certificate?

We, too will be married in Clark County, NV.

It makes no sense that the form does not allow you to list your new married name.

Am I missing something here?

When I filled out the paper to apply for a marriage license, there was no spot that asked me what I want my last name to be. I filled in my maiden name, how many marriages, parents names etc.

I took my husband's last name (I dont know if I have to go to a court to legally change my name to do that?) and did not put my old last name in my middle name. I just filled out my AOS paperwork with the last name I wanted, and I havn't been RFE'd or anything... seeing as I included a few copies of my marriage certificate.

I do find it very strange though that there's no spot for what you want your name to be, I mean how else would they know we changed our names? Just strange.

OK, thanks for the elucidation. Yea, so strange Clark County does not make a space for new married name.

I have been known to "make a space" and just write in the info I need to communicate, so I may try that if I find some blank space on the bottom of their form.

A popular way to change to the married name is for the woman to drop her middle name, and change it to her maiden last name, and take the hubbies last name. That way there is an easy "trail" to follow and understand.

Yes, I am filling out the I-485 AOS paperwork now, and for the very first question of FAMILY NAME for her, I am writing my last name, and making all the paperworks in this name we want.

It sounds like several VJ'rs have had good luck in having her name changed in this unclear process, and I hope it goes smoothly for all of us.

So many variables and pitfalls in this AOS/USCIS process, but if we focus and be ever diligent and patient, then somehow we make it through the system.

Cheers.
