My wife arrived in the US with me on March 11th from Thailand, is a Conditional Permanent Resident, has already received her Green card and already has a job. The problem is that she was hired with the understanding that she would have her social security card this week. According to some papers I received at the US Embassy in Bangkok she should receive her social security card within the the first 3 weeks of arrival and if it isn't received to contact the Social Security Administration. I recall that form HS-230 there was a section that asked if you would like the DHS to contact SSA upon arrival in the US to approve of her ss card and I checked 'yes'.

Now we are going on 4 weeks without any word on her social security card. I have gone to the local office, who don't seem to understand the immigration process, and they also say that she is not showing up in their system and we need to wait 30 days after her arrival before they can process a social security application. I have called the main SSA office at the 800 number and after finally speaking to an actual person they were even less helpful. In the meantime, my wife's boss is telling her that she can't get paid without having a social security number.

Does anyone know the actual process and how long it all really takes???

My stepson arrived 2-15 and we have not received anything on SS number yet. We did ask for ss number on the form also.

My wife applied for the SS# less than a week after her POE; someone on VJ said that her arrival

will not be in their computer records until she had been here for 2 weeks. Hence her application

was apparently thrown out (they don't give you any info about that if it was!). She will re-apply

after she gets the EAD document in the AOS process.

Application for an SSN is very quirky, it seems to be like the "wack-a-mole" game to some extent.

Have her take the Green card & her birth certificate to the S S office to apply for the card. USCIS should have sent notification to them because you checked " yes". We did as I suggested & got my wife & daughters S S card with no problem. Those cards arrived in about 10 days.

Application for an SSN is very quirky, it seems to be like the "wack-a-mole" game to some extent.

Flash forward to April 8 - I went to the SSA office armed with a "power of attorney" specifically

giving me the power to inquire about her case. She will be having surgery soon and didn't want

to travel to the city. First they told me that the power of attorney was no good, even without

looking at it, but this time they DID answer all my questions blink.gif after I presented my case in

my relentless but charming style whistling.gif.

They didn't offer to call her but I told them to call her and they did. Don't take no for an answer

if they say she has to come in person. I also had the application letter she got on Jan. 5 and

her passport. The SSA official was a bit nervous about the letter, because they couldn't find

her case in the computer and there was no record of a denial reply, which she was entitled to.

After explaining to me that we shouldn't have got married so soon after her POE but applied

for the SSN first, she told my wife to come in the next day and re apply! I calmly pointed out

that that would NOT be an option because, according to what she just told me, my wife could

only reapply after her AOS was achieved. What we DID need was a TAX ID for my wife because

the tax deadline is April 15. She has to have either a SSN or a tax ID and the IRS will NOT give

her a tax ID without a "DENIAL LETTER" from the SSA saying that she can't get a SSN right now.

The SSA official said that the denial letter would go out the same day. We hope to get it today

(April 10) or Monday (April 12) in time to file our taxes. According to the IRS, we have to give

them the denial letter along with a filled out W-7 form (Application for IRS Individual

Taxpayer Identification Number) and the tax return.
