went and applied for my ssn yesterday waited over an hour then a very nice lady called up our number i explained to her that i wanted to apply for a ssn and that i came in on a k1 visa and now have been married and that i wanted it in my married name...... her response was you need to go and chang it with immigration first because we are not allowed to do that.. i had our marriage certificate with birth date both parents names my maiden name and previous married name all on it i asked her to check the save and she said im telling you that it wont work it has to be done at immigration after reading on here and the advice from mdyoung i explained to her that if i have all the information need that it could be done.. she went away and spoke to a superviser who told her the same thing.. i asked her if she could put it through anyway and see what happens she said it is a wast of time it will reject it so after telling her that on the ssn site it says you do it this way she said well i will do it so you can see that i am right ....... RIGHT she got the bigest shock when it came back approved in my married name so i finally left with a receit and my new ssn will be in the mail. i kept my cool which was very hard but i was very insistant so thanks mdyoung for you advice

We are still waiting for the SSA to let us change my wifes SSN to her married name. Her I-94 expired so according to them she is out of status and an illegal alien. They will not issue her card in her married name until she gets her GC. She did get a card in her maiden name though.

when Claudeth applied for her card they told her to wait until she got something offical from USCIS like her EAD or GC before she trys to change her name with social security so that's what we did. No big deal and now she is working with her married social security card and fancy EAD card! Woo Woo :D
