Instructions from USCIS to the Civil Surgeon

"After the medical examination is completed, the civil surgeon must give you the original and completed Form I-693 in a sealed envelope. Do not open the envelope. The civil surgeon must also give you a copy of the completed and signed Form I-693 and any supporting documentation submitted to USCIS to you for your records." http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=eb1f3591ec04d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=dd346d26d17df110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD

I know but some of doctors mail/email you the copy of the form during 3 days. And it can be too late. And after all USCIS will request new I-693 without explanation that only one word is misspelled . Doctors win in this business because they request whole payment again.

From the thread on February and March Filings:

Application received <= 7 days => NOA1 <= 14 Days => Biometrics letter <= 14 Days => Biometric appointment <= 14 days => Interview Letter <= 30 days=> Interview Day

Seems like, barring any RFEs it would take about 80 days from the receipt of the application towards the interview day.

I guess if you walk in for biometrics, the time duration might decrease.

According to their timelines, that's what I thought too.

I'll also try to walk-in biometrics when time comes but I don't know that they'll allow me or not. I might have to go to Oakland CA office for biometrics. Is there anyone have done it at this office?

I went to the Van Nuys office in CA and had no problems whatsoever with walking in. I went early in the morning, and there were quite a few people sitting in the waiting area, but the officer at the door was really nice. He just asked to see my original appointment letter, made me fill out a form, and sent me through ten minutes later. There was no hassle over me being weeks early. :P

I havent read about anyone on VJ who was turned away for a walk in biometrics except of course if it was crowded or busy. My best bet is to get there early at the crack of dawn and go in right when it opens.

Just curious what is the other option beside walk-in? And will I have to do biometrics at any Police Station or the one they indicate?

I'm sorry, I don't know how it works. It is unbelievable good that you can walk-in as soon as you receive a letter.

I am pretty sure it has to be done at the designated USCIS office. These are digital fingerprints, something that most police stations dont have.

I am planning to walk in there as soon as I get the letter.

I'm sorry, I don't know how it works. It is unbelievable good that you can walk-in as soon as you receive a letter.

You are sent a letter with an appointment date. For example, in my case it was originally for the 24th of March or something crazy like that. But I did a "walk-in" where I just showed up at the office designated in the original letter, which in my case was Van Nuys, and I asked them if I could do my biometrics on the spot. I was allowed to do so, which meant that my information was filed that much sooner and I received my interview letter sooner. I actually received it two days after my Biometrics appointment was originally scheduled for, which means if I'd waited til then I'd probably not even have an interview date yet.

When you get the letter for Biometrics they indicate which USCIS office you need to go to. My Biometrics was in Van Nuys, but my INTERVIEW is in the Los Angeles office. So I guess they just have smaller, local places for stuff like Biometrics. You have to go to that place for the exam, whether you do a walk-in or not. :) And then for the interview, they'll indicate in that letter where you have to go.

Speaking of Biometrics though... I mentioned this to the Feb filers way back when, but I'll just reiterate it here as well for you guys. :)

Ladies who are applying for AOS with their new married names, bring your marriage cert. I submitted my papers under my married name, but obviously my ID (passport) has my maiden name on it. At the biometrics appt the lady made a bit of a fuss about that and I had to have her regional manager 'sign off' on my case because I didn't bring my marriage certificate with me to show that it's my husband's name.

So it's probably best to be over-prepared and bring your ID, your marriage cert, and have your husband bring ID as well.

Thank you for this info. I also doing under my married name papers. I made a copy of a marriage cert. and care it in my valet always (just in case especially until my ID name will change). Will they need original or copy is fine? And does my husband will have to go with me to biometrics?

Mine came with me because we did it on his day off and he drove. But I don't think that your husband HAS TO go. He's not required to do anything, mine had to wait out in the lobby for me.

I'm sure a copy will be okay, but if you think of it on the day, you could bring the original just to be extra safe. :)
