Obama's Civilian National Security Force

[As] president I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots [from 75,000] and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals, like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their effort connected to a common purpose.

People of all ages, stations and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem – they are the answer. So we are going to send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an energy corps, to conduct renewable energy and environmental clean-up projects in their neighborhoods all across the country.

We will enlist our veterans to find jobs and support for other vets, and to be there for our military families. And we're going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set.

We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded. We need to use technology to connect people to service. We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create online networks where American can browse opportunities to volunteer. You'll be able to search by category, time commitment and skill sets. You'll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities.

It's not Obama's private army in the making but hordes of make work jobs that a bigger threat because the truth is more plausible than anything a tin foil wearer can dream up. Obama wants to create jobs? His track record on that score doesn't inspire much hope as the private sector is the key to long term employment growth.

I hope this civil service doesn't drain the potential pool for military service or at least a civilian component shouldn't get the same benefits as the troops do.

Want to help your community? There are plenty of organizations out there looking for volunteers but they won't be able to compete when Obama starts throwing the cash out.

The last paragraph was just Obama going over the top as usual. Obama followers don't really listen to his words, just the soothing tone of his voice.

That's what I thought. Nothing intelligent to add.

Yeah, because running up a frenzy over right wing nut paranoia is the intelligent thing to do. Providing proper context to the remarks leaving the right wing nut propaganda exposed isn't. As I said, tin foil for you. Lots of it. Double layer.

It's getting out of hand. I live in a small town. A really small town. One bank. One gas station. One of everything. And when I stopped into the only drugstore in town, there was a stack of community grant applications. I didn't even know we had a community fund. A full three page application process -- for what? To plant daffodils at the edge of town? To sponsor an entry in the outhouse race? I am clueless. Except for the town's only bar, they pretty much roll up the sidewalks at sunset. Hell, we don't even have our own cop. We used to have a county deputy that sat in his car 5 days a week, sleeping away his shift, but the funds for Cops on the Beat ran out a long time ago, and we don't even have him anymore.

I haven's seen a single such application anywhere. And we have thousands of everything out here.

Are those applications forced on you? Anyone holding a gun to your head demanding you grab one, fill it out and turn it in? Or is that part of phase two?

No. I am just curious, is all. Nobody at the drugstore knows where the forms came from, or who is supposed to collect them, or where to send them. None such information is actually on the form.

Somebody just dropped them off there without the knowledge of the store personnel? If so, there should be no issue if you just grab them all and recycle them. If that would make you feel better...

Sure it wasn't something to do with the 2010 census as this is the mail in deadline today. Only about half of the people took 10 minutes of their busy lives to fill them out. A 1/3 of Hispanics claimed they didn't even know there was census taking place.

No, it was a form that somebody made up for grants from the Forestville Community Fund. Everybody knows about the census around here, as you can't swing a dead cat without hitting some census worker asking if you would like to fill out another census form.

The difference here is that the brown shirts of history were the tea partiers of their 1930s. Stupid, ignorant and angry people manipulated by clever politicians into committing acts of violence and violent intimidation in a climate of fear created by those same politicians. Where the US is concerned all of the fear seems to be coming from the people who are out of power.

My uncle is a Holocaust survivor from Hungary. He is not at all given to overreaction or hyperbole. I saw him last night, and he said that he hasn't been this frightened in 60 years. And Survivors have radar about these things.

Your uncle may not be given to overreaction or hyperbole, but clearly you are.

And no, survivors don't have a "radar about these things".

Most of the fear based posts about brown shirts and tea partiers are from you and people like you. I correctly predicted days before that the militia fearmongering would take place. I don't work for the Dept. of Justice but it was obvious it was coming as retrend from the 1990s and the need to the Obama Administration to create a narrative compelling enough to offset any of the growing criticism by dismissing all the opposition crazy or linked to crazies.

It's definitely working as you've swallowed the whole thing without question. If not, can you name names of those clever politicians calling for violent acts? Climate of fear? Who's afraid to speak up? As pure BS as the "chill wind blowing" line that actor, Tim Robbins, came up with a few years back.

Oh yeah, the tin foil hat brigade is at work again. Folks, you should make an appointment for a CAT scan or something. Them brains seems fried.

Here's what Obama actually said that day:

Some brownshirts, eh? You nuts really need to stock up on tin foil. Grab the Heavy Duty foil. You sure seem to need it. Nutcases.

If Bush had said exactly the same thing, would your reaction be the same?

Yes. Remember, here is what Obama spoke about. No brownshirt as far as the eye can see...
