GMA? GMA Network broadcasting company? I don't have any idea how things are done in the UK, and made no comments about it. I live in Hawaii and last I checked that was in the US.

It's my understanding the PI ERC which is a purely independent regulatory body performing the combined quasi-judicial, quasi-legislative and administrative functions in the electric industry, and handles such things as consumer complaints, applications for COC, RES and WA'si applications for a general change in rate, power supply contracts and so on.

I think he meant to say Gloria Macapagal Arroyo...

Yeah, I know. Arroyo and her kind only skim off the top. The real people behind the energy production and many other things in the PI is people like the Lopez family. Or as it is today.

Lopez Group of Companies, this company has more money then GOD! If you get my point.

ooops sorry i glanced at your flag there and assumed you were in the UK, anyway yea good ole Gloria  she wields the power to allot how much fuel oil, coal, and other energy producing products for the energy producing companies, thus dictating how much power is available throughout the country, hydro electric is short on power during the dry season and petroleum products are rationed so the story goes ...

Yeah kind-a looks Brit. I’m not much of a historian but if I remember, it’s a holder over from the U.K.

I guess some already changed their minds...

Lol. I think we still do... Surely, hubby cant find any discent job with a discent pay there unless his company own a business there and send him there to manage it, but ofcourse that's not gonna happen coz of the abusayaf lol. So we probably just gonna save our own money to build even small business that we both familiar with. Looking 2 to 3 years to settle everything, but who knows if the economy get better hubby change his mind lol.

count me as still wanting to retire in the Philippines...

Like I mentioned before her family is pretty well off... The plan would include opening a small pharmacy there since she is a pharmacist and about 12 years younger than me (she will still enjoy working and I am sure I could stock shelves and sweep up). LOL did you say you enjoy peace and quiet ? have you ever spent any significant time here ? other then a hotel i mean ? let me give you some insight, houses here are not built like the homes in the US there is no insulation so you can hear everything that goes on outside and that includes videoke machines, dogs constantly barking, roosters crowing just made me giggle when you said you like peace and quiet her family would have to own the business or your wife because as a foreigner are not allowed to own nor work in a business that is not owned by a Filipino, do you plan to make money in the pharmacy business ? probably should look at the generics pharmacy .com be a tough competitor good luck to you but I would definitely suggest a six month test drive before making any definite plan ;)

When my wife and I talk on Skype, she had always used a headset. A few weeks ago her headset quit working so she's just using the mic built into the cam. I can't help but laugh sometimes when we're talking. It's just like being there..LOL Roosters, neighbors that like to fight about once a week, Nanay and Tatay singing in the other room, 6 dogs barking, every kid in the barangay playing... If you have a big family there, there's no such thing as peace and quiet. Someone is draped on you (usually several), kids running in and out, neighbors running in and out..LOL Gotta love the Phils :D

And, yes I still plan to retire there. In all the madness there, somehow it's still more laid back and stress free than here in the US.

There's much food for thought for aspiring Philippine expats.

Has anyone who talks about retiring in the PI really planed and investigated things like:

Talk with a Expat

Mail for Expat

Banking Basics for Expat

Medical and dental

Medicare for Expat

Social Security Direct Deposit in the PI

Getting a Driver's Lic. In the PI

Telephone Services for Expat

Cost of Living in the PI

Who Really owns the Home/Land

How you Build a Home, the right way the first time (Good Luck! It's like the three little pigs)

How Not to Get Ripped. when your building a home ( Not Just the cost is involved)

Crime ( remember this is not your turf)

This is more then likely the short end of a list.

honestly, its not really bad to retire in PI. It depends to you on how you will deal with it. I had a neighbor in PI he was a retired army from here(USA). He married a filipina and decided to live there...he has a monthly pension from here and he was just renting a house. He doesnt want to go back here because he cant afford to live here with his pension alone. In PI, he doesnt need to work...just lay back and relax thats what he wants. I dont know if he has a house now but I know that he is enjoying his life there...enjoying motorcycling and enjoying young girls.

So who still wants to retire in PI? hehehehehehe...
