Retiring in the Philippines

I want to, but my hubby can't decide for now. He said too early to tell his only 35 and im 29. He told em one time he wants to retire in Hawaii but still hoping he will gonna change his mind. But what place he like I will support him.

Financially speaking, if you plan on retiring in the PI and perhaps buy land and especially build a home, don’t give your money to anyone but the contractor and you better be living in the PI at the time of construction to keep an eye on were your money is really going!

Oh Hell yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we cant afford to live in the United States for retirement...LOL! In any event we are definitely going back there..................can't wait to get a yaya!

We are not retiring in the Philippines. But as early as now, we are looking for places to retire here in the US.

This is definitely part of our plan and we have been discussing about it though the place where we're at now in Michigan is actually a nice place for retirement also (we're by the lake), despite the cold winter weather. Considering a retirement place involves careful planning and serious decision making. There are several things to consider like location (i.e. proximity to hospitals, transportation, church, grocery stores, and other important establishments), environment (i.e. peaceful and quiet, gated community, etc), weather condition (i.e. not flood prone) and many other things. You must also do some research about Philippine laws on property ownership by foreigners. My husband has been doing a lot of research about this lately. For now, our plan is to invest on a condo unit, spend the winter months in the Philippines and the summer months in the US until such time we decide where in the Philippines we would want to settle.

You have to have a "feel" of the place before you can really decide so I suggest you make several visits in the Philippines, specifically the province where you plan to settle and see for yourself if it's going to be an ideal place for your retirement.

The OP should retire in Hawaii, I mean she is Ilocano, and half of Hawaii is Ilocano now. My wife says Hawaii is a nice mix of PI and the US. So will retire here and just visit PI alot.

We also have the same plans, my wifes family live in Northern Samar but I think I would rather live closer to medical care. Perhaps Cebu area. Here is a great site for info

It's a nice place to visit, but I don't see any point in making it a permanent residence, especially because of the distance it would put between our family. Most likely, our children will want to live and work here in the states when they grow up. I want to be near them.

I left my heart in the Philippines when I moved away at age 12 and I want to move back there one day. I keep telling myself that i'll be out of the US no later than 59 1/2, when i'll be able to draw my 401k with no penalties. i'll probably settle down in the baguio area.
