We are looking at that. This fall I hope to setup a bank account in BPI while in Manila on Business and begin the process of showing banking history. In a few years a lot and perhaps a house.

Where in MN are you from? Trisha and I live north of Minneapolis.

Apple Valley, nice to know there is someone else who has convinced a gal to move to the frozen north

Think it over! It's not all "quiet beach" and "watching the sunset".

Financially speaking, if you plan on retiring in the PI and perhaps buy land and especially build a home, don’t give your money to anyone but the contractor and you better be living in the PI at the time of construction to keep an eye on were your money is really going!

I understand what you are saying and I do appreciate your concern. When I said that my fiancee's family is well established I mean they are pretty well off. Both her parents were university of Manila professors, her uncle is a general and another owns a resort etc... so even if we are not there yet I can trust that we will have people to look after our needs. I had to laugh one time when Floriann remembered that she had been given a piece of land but has never seen it nor does she remember how big it is.

One thing I know for sure is that she is not after my money...

For over 3 years I had a house in the Philippines and a house in America. I was spending about 8 months in the Pi and 4 months here. If you are a type A personality, you probably will not be able to survive living in the Philippines. A lot will depend on the area you choose. Some areas there is a great support system for expats, others none at all. But if you are used to having it your way, it will not happen. If you are a laid back, easy going personality, and can adapt it can be a great place to live. But dont be a sucker, as a foreigner many will think you are rich. The requests for money will happen on almost a daily basis from 50 pesos, to thousands. Learn to say no.

I love putting the cart before the horse (heck we just got the NOA1) but I am getting up there in age and a person needs to think of their options...

After hundreds of hours of talking with my love, we have covered many subjects as we have gotten to know each other. One of our conversations revolves around where we would retire. She is from the far north of the Phils and has a great established family there. I live in Minnesota where it is very cold in the winter and I don't have a large family.

I love the thought of living out our lives together on a quiet beach and just watching the sunset and maybe occaisionally watching the sunrise. Financially if things go as planned we should be able to make this dream come true.

Is there anyone else that is contemplating something like this???

We are not retiring in the Philippines. But as early as now, we are looking for places to retire here in the US.

My hubby and I are really looking forward to retiring in the Philippines. :D He calls it mini-America - he really likes how a lot of things are the same. The only thing that really bothers him is the traffic. He can't stand how people drive and how no one really follows driving laws. Other than that, he loves the Philippines and is really excited. It won't be for at least 20 or 30 years though. We'll also probably keep a house in the U.S. too. We still have quite some time to plan so in the meantime, we'll be concentrating on saving up for retirement.

My brother is about to get married (next year) and is planning to buy a house soon - he and my hubby get along really well so my hubby says that we'll probably live close to wherever my brother and his fiancee end up living (definitely somewhere in Metro Manila - where I lived for most of my life before moving to the U.S.) :D

Philippines is paradise. You will live like a king and queen. You have a maid to do the houseworks. Living here is simple, quiet and cheaper. You can eat fresh fruits, vegetables and fish. Filipinos are friendly, nice. warm and hospitable people.

At first you will miss your food, family and friends. You will feel sad for leaving your heritage and adopt a new culture. It can be frustrating. As you gain friends and get used to food, climate, pollution, traffic and fumes, life will be fine.

My husband wanted to live in Tagaytay but I like in Baguio. He likes to live near the beach. I dont like it because its far from the hospital, market and civilization. We agreed to live near Asian Hospital, mall and market. We will go to Baguio and Beaches for a vacation.

When considering a place to live, make sure its accessible to facilities especially for health concerns. Sad to say that medical care is not at par with the U.S. standard. So far only those tertiary hospitals can at least level up to U.S. medical care. Dont live too far if you have health problems. Consider also your safety being a foreigner.

I have been able view photos of that place and it is beautiful, My fiancee is from just Ilocos Norte but she works in Kuala Lumpur so when I went to see her I never got to go to her home town or meet her parents. I did get to see Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Cambodia however and that was a wonderful time.
