Hello

I need a help filing a tax paper. I just get a green card and did not have income last year. My wife is a student and she also did not have any income. Our family was helping us.

We know we don't get any return so we don't need to file, but we would like to file it as a proof document to remove the temporary condition from GC next year.

I heard we need to file even if you don't have any income.

What is the best way to file? What do we need to file?

I heard H&R charges a lot so we would like to find a cheaper way.

Thank you all for your time.

This is the wrong forum. One of the moderators/organizers should move this question to a more suitable forum to get the best replies.

However, does anyone claim you and your wife as dependents? If not, then you should file tax returns, as you said, even if you don't make any income. The tax returns for you should be very easy. No need for H&R block or any other tax service.

However, I would start looking on the IRS website....

You could ask a friend or family member to help you prepare your return. Or use one of the online services (TurboTax, etc.) they walk you through the steps in very plain language.

If not then the expense of a tax preparation service may be worthwhile to help you both learn the process.

Go to IRS.gov and look at the instructions for 1040EZ (who has to file).

You may also check publication 519 (Non-Resident Aliens & Dual-Status Aliens).

Basically, you have to file if you have income withheld, so you can get a refund.

If neither of you has ANY income, I don't think you have to file - check with IRS.

However, I believe your Affidavit of Support will be based on your joint sponsor's

income, so his/her income has to be documented. Both the petitioner

and joint sponsor must submit the I-864.
