Nope. In an office of less than 10, the Boss doesn't seem to mind. Of course, in an office of less than 10, we're more interested in getting things done as quickly as we can so we can go home early. Playing on the computer cuts in on that goal.

At previous, larger employers... Oh yeah. I got a verbal reminder of the computer use policy because of an e-mail my husband sent to me in Thai. Talking with my friend, he said it only came across their board because it used non-Roman characters. To this day, I don't think that's true. And, yes, that cut back on my non-work-related computer use while at work.

This isn't specifically in regards to email, but many employers also check for facebook and twitter posts done during work hours. I had this own owner of a radio station who was pissed with his radio copy/marketing account exec. The employer would check into his facebook and twitter posts throughout the day, print off and keep the posts in his employee file. Of course the motivation behind this was to show "theft of company time" and that as his sales of marketing materials and radio copy were sliding, his personal computer posting time was on the increase.

If you have a vengeful employer, people can get screwed.

Of course the poor employee felt completely stalked when all of this came out.

What if you work in the porn industry?

Well then everyone's getting screwed. :P

And the dinner always consists of a spit roast or a Pittsburgh platter.

Avoid using the internet for personal communications unless you don't care if everyone reads it. Best piece of advice, as there is no reasonable expectation of privacy (4th amendment only applies to Gov't and you are using a private network), is don't do it. Nothing is that important.

I'd monitor Mrs. Cat too. I'd bust her for posting on VJ.

She's heavily armed and has several recipes for roasted turtle balls.   I also hear that she uses a special rub when she BBQs, she gives the tenderloin a real thorough rub job.

Here in the People's Republic the school I teach at believes it is pefectly fine to tell us we can't patronize a coffee stand near our school. All of the teachers are hourly employees and these morons think they have the right to dictate where we drink coffee on our time. I had no choice but to comply, but it is killing me. If we weren't in the midst of a global recession...

After experiencing things like that over the past year emails seem small in comparison. I won't even start on what they do to their own.

Last company I worked for, when they introduced a spam filter, just after I started there, had "erection" as one of the trigger words blocking e-mails. Fair enough, you say. Quite reasonable.

Except if you are a construction management company and need to talk to the subcontractor about to put up 2,500 tons of structural steel for you on a project, the technical term for which is, you guessed it "ERECTION".

After that, the joke was that we didn't have a crack I.T. department, our I.T. department was on crack.

At the hospital I worked for I called the IT department to ask they had the ability to monitor us since it was all intranet. They said yes and even if we deleted old emails they could pull those up. Did they monitor us I don't know. They didn't crack down on those that I knew used the internet. I know they blocked a bunch of websites but if you clicked on them 15 times they'd come up or if you used the foreign language version they'd work so you could log into your email because they didn't block those.

I did have one experience though before I left and that was when the Director of the Department called me into the office to ask me if a co-worker was having sex with Doctors or people in the office. I was shocked she asked me that and I said no because I didn't want to get fired for not reporting it. Of course this co-worker was having sex with Doctors in the conference room, and giving blow jobs to the lab techs in the mail room, and having random guys come to the department late at night to go back in the rolling files and romp. I knew this for a fact because she did it on my shifts or when I'd bring her lunch at night when she was covering night shifts. Did the Director pluck this from monitoring emails or phone calls I don't know but she mentioned she got her information from an email. It could be someone else in the office that informed her since I wasn't the only one that worked a shift with this female. To this day I wonder if I should tell that Director the truth, since I no longer work there, but it's been so long ago I don't know if it would matter anymore or if it would just have negative effects on me somehow.

Gee, you owe your soul to the company store, even though they are only paying you a couple of bucks per hour. Ironically while we may think we live in a democracy, corporations are based on a dictatorship that occupies a great deal of our time. You behave, dress, be there wherever they tell you to be, and do whatever they tell you to do. Even miss your kids football game when your company has problems, and they always have problems.

When something really important comes up, can text my wife on her cell phone, her computer is fully monitored and maybe that is the way it should be.

In that case, I will bring my net-book to the workplace, with the supplied air card for "independent" Internet access. Will that work?

Yes that will and that is what I meant when I said I would be in doo doo because I drive a truck now and use a lap top and an air card as I am now typing this. If they are watching this then it would mean they have a secret cam looking at me. I have several friends that bring their notebooks to work with them and an aircard and use that for p0ersonal and the work for only work related stuff. No one should ever use work computers for personal stuff.

You can shift a Roadranger and ####### at the same time without missing a shift?

You would be surprised at all I can do while driving but since I live in this damn truck for two weeks at a time and only home for a few days it would have to mean they are using a cam somehow and able to watch me even when I am not driving.
