I wonder about this, given the legal ability for employers to monitor this activity at will......

Do they?

Before I entered my new profession I can tell you that yes they do and are able to. They pretty much have to save themselves liability. Always assume they are reading and seeing anything you do at your workplace. I used to now and again monitor my employees and even had to counsel them with written reprimands.

Yes. I actually used to review selected email communications of my staff - some random and some based on trigger vocabulary contained in emails. They have since centralized that review function somewhere else and I am sure glad they did. Didn't care for the role of Big Brother at all...

After I taught high school for two years, I worked as an associate in a BPO company in Cebu City. One of the clients of that BPO is BT (British Telecom). We couldn't open Facebook or any social networking site aside from VJ, no YM, Gmail chat was disabled, porn sites were blocked, etc. A few employees were suspended due to software downloads and some received warnings for sending e-mails to their friends who were working in another BPO.

I never got caught though. I e-mailed my husband a lot and enjoyed online quizzes.

If you worked for me, I'd monitor you closely.

I know it does happen, but is it systemic?

Consensus veiwpoint, is it happening across the board?

Meanwhile, some musical interlude.....

Yes most places anyway it is across the board. If you are using the computer at a workplace then just expect they are seeing anything. The odds though are they just sometimes coming across something. When I was having to play big brother they didn't have the programs that could block or do key word warnings and they do now. I did get to find out some neato things about some of my employees and sometimes a great pic or two though. Onetime I got a shock by finding out someone is gay.

Forgot to add. I even told everyone they could be watched and be careful what they did on the network.
