Hi all!

We just bought tickets to go to Nigeria in January! Yay! I'm so excited, because I have not met his parents yet. (He was living in Europe when we met and did the whole visa journey). My husband just recieved his green card. Our flight has a layover in Madrid, and we want to leave the airport and visit his brother. I'm assuming he will need to get a visa, even though he is a U.S. permanent resident? Don't be mean if this is an obvious question, just wanted to ask this knowledgeable group. (Wish I had found this site sooner)...

Thanks!

Wasino,

hi and congrats on ur first trip to Naija. I know u will enjoy it!!! :) Yes, I do think ur husband will need a visa to leave the airport in Madrid. To be sure, you can check the Spain embassy website to be on the safe side. Now just be careful there in Spain cos I heard there is a lot of crime that goes on there even in the airport.

Taye:

As per your inquiry about the cost of a ticket to Naija. Well my husband traveled home this past February and he paid something like $1200 for a round trip ticket. I remember when I went in Feb. of 2004 and paid only a lil over $800 for my ticket. You can find some fairly cheap tickets at this website....

www.bt-store.com

That is where we purchased our tickets from. Hope this info helps.

I agree with Sweetee. It is most likely that a visa is needed for Spain. I don't know if they consider that short of a visit a transit or visitor's visa. We did not fly through Madrid, but were told that even to leave the airport for the day we would need a visa.

Best Wishes on your trip, it sounds fabulous.

I doubt she will need a transit visa, i remember checking that out in January when i travelled to Nigeria. Most european countries does not reuire a transit visa for USA documents.

Prices will likely be more expensive in January then in Feb. because more people will be traveling (for many it is still the vacation season) so don't be surprised if the tickets for Feb. are much cheeper than Jan. When I was pricing my tickets some years ago, I was looking around in Oct. (I didn't know when I would go so I priced for that time of year). The price was 1000 cheeper than I ended up paying in December (returning in Jan). So price definately depends on time of year. HOpe that helps.

hey, thanks everyone for the reply!

Sweetee--not worried about crime in Spain, I visited my husband when he was living there 3 times...so he knows his way around. We chose to go through there to visit his brother.

Joej---I kind of knew that my husband would need a visa for Spain. Kind of sad, he gave up his Spanish residency for me...

Ursi---We will be flying into Lagos, but spending most of our time in Benin City, Edo State. We found airfare for $1,100 (that is after taxes) on Iberia. Cheapest we found, and we wanted our layover to be in Madrid. We fly out of Minneapolis...I'm sure you lucky people flying out of NY or NJ or a more major city could find a better deal.

mandolinv---we are leaving middle of january, arriving back beginning of february....on iberia, there was no price difference for january or february.

heather &justice--thanks for the tip, but already bought the ticket...lol

i appreciate your advice. i'm excited about the trip, i can't wait to meet my husband's parents...so much better than talking on the phone...lol.

Anyone try www.skyauction.com? Iberia and Virgin Atlantic offer great travel deals to Nigeria every week. Of course it is a bid auction, but at least the fares including taxes for the low season are pretty reasonable. We have never used either of these carriers, and now considering the recent news developments coming out of the U.K. , we are pretty reluctant to do any connecting flights in London etc.

Since we are currently in the process of making our travel arrangements for January. We are strongly swaying towards the new direct NY to Lagos flight that North American Airlines is offering. Besides, it will be nice to not have to worry about getting off the plane and hanging around for several hours in the airport. (This has always been such a tiring experience for me.)

JideAmericanPrincess, is the first one of our members to try it out, and she highly recommended NAA.

We are so looking forward to it!
