do I need to apply for a waiver ahead of my interview in case they deny me at the interview?

will the answer for the waiver take a long time to process or can I give it to the official at the state department at the time of interview or am I going to have to wait a few months before they give me an answer if the waiver has been approved or not?

You cannot apply for a waiver until your visa has been denied. If your visa is denied, they will tell you at the interview. It is good to have the waiver packet prepared ahead of time (like we did) so if the denial comes, you are prepared.

The waivers take a lot of time to be approved, perhaps EMT can tell you what to expect.

Canadian waivers get sent to Vermont to process, they take 12 months or more to process. You can submit the waiver (and pay for it) the same day that you are denied, but they take 30 days or more to transfer it to Vermont.

Typically you can mail it, but it adds time.
