nah, don't feel bad sdw, it is what it is. I'm actually GLAD that they got it right with a few of us. I always get all huffy and want to write a letter -- they do ask for feedback... but really? I'm sure they don't give a rat's butt.

Don't feel bad, sdw... we'll all get it sorted.

:)

I totally agree LGG. Do all or none. Feel bad for you all waiting.

Yeah, I agree with Lgg. I'm glad that some folks got their SSNs quickly by only checking the infamous box too!

It's just a little odd when it works for some people and not for others. I went through the exact same POE as Biglos, and he got his within two weeks, whereas it has been almost three weeks since my POE, and I'll go down to the SSA office today and will more than likely have to apply for one. I do NOT begrudge the fact that Biglos got it so quickly -- not in the least! -- but find it strange that everything about my process was smooth, and I went through the same POE...yet in my case, no SSN.

When I moved last summer I had no expectations of receiving my SSN without having to apply. I had read enough posts to realize I would likely have to make the trip to the local SSN office.

I just figured it was one more hoop to jump through but at least I was already in the US and not still sitting in Canada waiting for an interview date.....so no big deal :)

The federal government decided you got through the process too easily, and needed to toss in a speedbump to keep it fair. ;)

 that's exactly what I said when I was having issues getting a DL because my information in the SAVE system was messed up. I had my K-1 approved n less than 7 months, AOS approved in 3, so therefore I had to wait 4 months to get a state drivers license. In the end I think I still came up ahead!

I know CR-1's are different, but for K-1's it's not uncommon to wait 4-6 weeks to get your SSN when you go down to the office and apply. It's possible your applications are being processed but there is some kind of delay. I guess it doesn't hurt to go down and at least investigate!

Alrighty...just got back from the SSA office here in Alexandria, and despite having to wait an obscenely long amount of time to do what amounted to five minutes of computer inputting for the clerk...it's on its way.

The first line took about half an hour to file through...and that was just a line to get processed / prioritized! Then I had to wait a full hour in the waiting room before I was called up and the process was completed. They took my birth certificate, passport w/ visa and my filled-out SSN form. Then, once it was done, the clerk had me look over all the vital stats to make sure it was all okay...

*NOTE* I'm pretty sure that your eventual SSN number is ON THAT SHEET. They don't give it to you there (you have to wait for the card), but if you have a good memory for numbers, there is a field on there below all of your vitals that has a nine-digit number that looks suspiciously like an SSN... I didn't memorize it, unfortunately, other than the 061 at the beginning, but I probably could have taken an extra moment under the guise of "verifying data" and committed it to memory. Oh well. Just a word to the wise.

The form they gave me at the end said that I'll receive the card within two weeks. Recent experiences indicate that it'll be sooner than that.

OK, just got back from SSA office, and surprise surprise when the guy was processing things, he said he had nothing indicating that my wife had a SSN,. That's total bull, why do they have that little check box if they don't forward the information.

But I'm happy to report it's coming within 2 weeks, I'm sure it'll come next week.

Yeah...it's gotten to the point where I'd recommend that people check NO on the DS-230. It's more of a sure thing, and will ultimately be faster. Seriously, I'm sure that less than half of the people on VJ who checked the box got their SSN that way.

Ooo, good catch. Depending how speedily Yvonne's number does or doesn't get processed after POE, we'll have to keep an eye out for that.

Hmmm... you could more or less verify that by checking the area number and group number against area numbers assigned, especially if the area number is in the 729-733 "enumeration at entry" range, which I assume is what they use for immigrants. 061 is in the New York range... possibly Buffalo?

It'd be a lot easier if SSNs used a sane system with a check digit, like Canadian Social Insurance numbers.

My hubby got 2 welcome letters, 1 early last week, 1 last Friday, got his greencard on Friday, but no SS# yet. He drove to the SS office today in the pouring rain and they told him he should have it in 2 weeks. Hope it comes soon, he's starting his job on Friday, and he has to write them a letter for their file stating that he understands he will not get paid for any hours worked until he shows them his Social Security card... Oh what fun!

They told me 2 weeks for my new card when I changed my name, but I got it in 2 business days tops.

Long line ups!! Thats why I recommend if ya can--go line up before the office opens! I did that and whammo, in and out. By the time it opens, the line ups can be long! I guess 1 way or another u wait in line, lol but usually shorter of a wait if u get there before it opens

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Heh...yeah. I was thinking that going two or three hours after it opened would have weeded out all of the people who rushed to get there before they went to work. I completely forgot that there are many other things that the SSA office does as well... This sounds bad, but I really felt like I was in a poor house there...or a soup line. It was quite a glum place.
