Las Vegas wedding & AOS - can we leave with certified copy in hand?

Hello -

My fiance, who is getting a K1 visa, and myself want to get married as fast as possible when he gets to the US, since we can't file AOS with EAD until we're married and he can't work until he gets EAD. A certified marriage certificate, which I believe you must get from a county recorder, is required in the AOS application.

We want to get married in Vegas, over the weekend. I'm wondering if it's possible to persuade a marriage officiant to let you take the marriage certificate to the recorder's office yourself (as mentioned here) and get a copy of it that's good for AOS the same day? Do you first have to take it to the county (clerk's?) office to get an actual marriage license, and then to the recorder's office or something?

I see the Vegas recorder's office is open Monday-Friday, which kind of wrecks our plans for a weekend, but if we can leave with the AOS-ready certified copy, it's worth it.

Does anyone have any experience doing this in Vegas or elsewhere?

(This thread is about Vegas but didn't answer this question).

Thank you!

- Rito

If you tip the minister well he will make sure the papers are delivered to the recorder that day ( assuming they are open) and your certificate will be available the next day.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I actually got an Express delivery envelope, with postage paid, and asked the Minister to use it. It reached the Clerk's office (in VA) in 2 days. However, the Clerk's office took 10 days to give me a copy of it. You can try calling the clerk and asking nicely if they can do it sooner, as it honestly takes them 5 minutes to print out copies and stamp them.

Good luck!

This page says their marriage services division is open seven days a week from 8am until midnight.

And there's a phone number, so you or your fiance could call and ask about receiving the marriage certificate after the ceremony.

Your other question about getting the certificate fast elsewhere. We did. We married on a Sunday afternoon (in Texas) and our judge friend signed the license. We took it to the county clerk's office Monday morning. It took about 10 minutes for them to record the marriage and make a certified copy for us. Knight and Magpie did the same thing in San Antonio, TX, while on a trip from Alaska. They married on the weekend, then went by the courthouse Monday on the way to the airport and got their marriage recorded and a certificate.

Everything depends on the county and state where you ultimately marry. I always suggest you call up the real offices and ask questions, whether it be your local county or Las Vegas and find out what works best for you.

Go on the Clark county website to order a certified copy, takes a bit to get to you, but that one is what you use for official purposes such as immigration. We did the same thing in January.
