Chennai beneficiaries - question about the stupid VFS:

- hey guys (Raj and vivek and others), i called up chennai embassy yesterday and asked them if they rec'd my docs and all (i knew they did since i tracked it) and asked if they needed anything else. they said that the submitted docs should suffice. the lady basically said that the local police station PCC was most likely not necessary, even after explaining to them their own PCC requirement rule. anyway, interesting info i got from them was that she said that the NVC (and not chennai) had mailed out package 4 to my wife on april 29th (the same day we got our interview date). my wife still hasnt gotten it and she said to give it another week for it to get there (i guess it takes 2 weeks or so to get there ?). in case my wife didnt recieve it, to go to the consulate website and download the packet 4 forms. according to the packet 4 forms on the website, it says to submit the same exact docs to the VFS, along with paying the fees. the only thing the lady specified was to pay the VFS fees. so basically that whole VFS document they have online doesnt mean anything, since most chennai folks here are going to their VFS offices, paying the fees, having the VFS make copies of their passports and affix a sticker and dropping off a ds-230 form. does this sound just about right? the VFS doc says to submit all the other stuff we submitted to the NVC; i'm guessing it doesnt have to be done again, correct? can someone please confirm this? i guess we can just always be on the safe side and take the docs they asked (which is basically the ds-230 IV package which we already submitted to the NVC). there is also some form to fill out for the medical, which looks to be a 4 line stupid form, which apparently chennai appollo folks have not filled out (according to Raj; you just fill out a form by the hospital).

it seems that the chennai website is monumentally out of date!

hi! hobokenworkingman

i totally agree with you. mumbai and chennai have outdated forms/instructions on their sites as well as sending out obsolete forms/instructions to the applicants. these are the updated links to the instructions they should be sending out to the applicants.

for chennai : http://travel.state.gov/pdf/supplements/MDR-SUP-ENGL-0001-0903.pdf

for mumbai : http://travel.state.gov/pdf/supplements/BMB-SUP-ENGL-0001-0902.pdf

check the edition dates. the mumbai is very much upto date since on the last page they mention (in red) the passport certificate, as this is a chronic problem with the applicants at the nvc stage who have to approach ahemdabad passport office for the pcc and the officials there ask for the appointment letter for the issuance of the pcc. this has been cleared in the above instruction sheet which the mumbai consulate has failed to put up on their site.

i think it would be a good idea for you to submit the following documents (if asked) to the vfs or the consulate : a ds 230 1&2 (a copy of the one submitted would also do, if nothing has changed since then) but with the current date and original signature. photocopies of mc & bc, police certificates & pcc, two visa photographs and photocopies of the biopages of you passport. and any other original document asked for but not submitted to the nvc. i think this you can get from the checklist that accopanies your appointment email from the nvc.it is very clearly mentioned on the consular sites -that if you have paid your fees no need to pay again and also if the i864s are submitted - then there is no need to submit again at the consulates. but i think its advisable to carry copies of every paper submitted at the nvc - to the interview. never know what the prescreener/consular officer may ask and we do not want them to hand out a 221g for missing documents? that would only lengthen things.

Thank you so much! i will do...

i interviewed at mumbai. so i think you check with chennai consulate and vfs and also with vivek or kirthiraj. i had done my medicals at apollo gandhinagar, gujarat. it was a one day affair. reported at 8 am was done by 10.30 am with all the physicals, eyesight, xray and vaccinations. collected reports at 3.00 pm same day. just had to carry passport, 3 pp photos, 2 photocopies of passport biopages and previous vaccine record if any. the forms were given by the hospital. quick and efficient staff there.

again that was gandhinagar, so you check with your hospital there.

further, for any query email to the consulate. they answer promptly. in fact, mumbai consulate had sent me scanned copy of the consulate app. letter promptly and emailed the pkt 4 (with outdated instructions and forms) later thru speedpost. this was in answer to my request for the consulate app letter which i needed to submit to passport office for my pcc.

Mine would be the pictures of our vacations to together. Consular did look at those pictures and said the pics were lovely.

They didn't look at ANY of our evidence but our trump card, if I had to guess, would be the fact that my student visa is valid till July 2010 (well, not anymore since they cancelled it) and I left the U.S. in June 2009. [i mean, if I was that desperate to be in the U.S. by any means possible, then I would've never left, right?] The CO seemed kind of surprised that I left prior to it's expiry and even remarked saying, "wait, when did you graduate? This is still valid."

Also, the fact that we met in college probably worked out well for us, I'd say.
