Ok, so I think I can type without shorting out hubby's laptop by raining tears into it:

We got to the consulate early, first in line. Met VJ member SupportGeek-hop I got that right, he came second. Nobody else came til much later, really long line by the time doors opened. We went throught security, got letter A and were told to wait for the guard to bring us upstairs. We waited upstairs for about an hour, then hubby was called up to window 10. The lady behind the window starting asking for hubby's docs. They had everything, but she kept saying she needed the translation of his birth certificate. He told her she had it, she insisted she didn't. I gave him the additional copy I had, and as she placed it in the stack of paper, right on top of the one they already had! She took hubby's fingerprints and told us to go sit down. About 45 minutes later, hubby was called to room seven. We started walking in, and the lady inside took one look at me and Chellie and said, "No, get out, I just want to talk to him. Go sit in front and wait." I gave hubby the evidence package and waited outside the room with Chellie. 5 minutes later hubby comes out, and I hear fire breathing dragon lady screaming, "No! No time, get out, fin, you take the paper and mail it!" I'm standing right there, so I ask hubby what the hell is going on. He said she needs my tax information-and I tell him it's right there in your hand, go give it to her. He said she wouldn't take it, and said she doesn't have time get out and you can mail it later. So we have to get out. So we are standing right there in the consulate with everything we need to get his visa, and we can't because she won't even look at the information.

So technically, we didn't even have an interview. We went to the post office on the way back to his cousin's place, and mailed the required docs. It said they will take up to 4 weeks to process, and maybe they will let us know if we get another interview date. I had a really bad feeling about the whole thing, because it didn't make any sense. When we got back to the apartment, I looked through some of the papers she had given back to hubby. She returned all of my previous tax year transcripts. I would not have brought this next point up, but I am wondering if it has any bearing on the reason why she was acting that way. On the bottom of the stack is a piece of paper that says: Routing Slip, and it is dated on the day NVC received all of our docs. It reads...From: Fraud Prevention-1, To: File Room. File Room is crossed out, and DK-1 is handwritten in. It has our USCIS and NVC case numbers, hubby's name, and the words 'Case Status: P4. There is a note section that reads "Petition reviewed and flagged by NVC Fraud Prevention Unit". Does anyone have any idea what this means?

Wow, that is all of our worst nightmare. No matter how prepared we are, if we get an unreasonable interviewer or someone who is having a bad personal day.....that is what I fear will happen! :( Obviously the warning page from NVC had something to do with her behavior. Maybe because it was flagged by NVC and she didn't want the responsibility of approving you on her "record". She just wanted to get you out of her office and give the responsibility of your approval to someone else.

So what exactly do the documents say you need to do for the next step? Did she just verbally say to send in the taxes, did she hand him a checklist as she was melting-down or say it will be coming in the mail? I would get everything in writing from the Embassy before you address this. Deep breath, if they were going to deny you, I imagine they would have on the spot, or NVC would have requested additional info. I think they are just being cautious asses because of the NVC flag, but it's good you weren't immediately denied! So you already sent in the taxes? As I said, I'd want in writing whatever her specific requests were to limit future complications.

Best of luck, at least you are with your honey! (L) (L)

if you got the 221g for some want of some documents and you send them the requested documents then this is what you may expect

1. you will be issued a visa on approval - no second interview (if they asked you to mail in the passport with the requested documents)

2. you will be given a second visa interview appointment - (this should be marked on the 221g that they issued you)

3. if they still suspect fraud then they will delay your process for some reason or other - usually further adm processing - till you case becomes time-barred - i.e. 6 months and return your file to uscis. (this is the worst case scenario).

read and try to understand the communication in the 221g carefully and you will be able to understand where you stand and what future action to take.

dont worry - the turn around time for the 1st and 2nd is usually less than 7 business days from the day the embassy/consulate receives your documents.

i hope its the first one. all the best.

Oh no! I'm sorry, MSP. It's good you sent in the documents they want. I don't think that's the problem, though. Being flagged by FPU at the NVC, I would look over the documents you sent in to them and that you filed with USCIS. Forget the interview at this point. Comb over them. Review the answers to the forms with your hubby. Is there something that wasn't answered correctly? The 221g was related to taxes, did your hubby work while he was here? Is there something in the AOS packet that's unclear? Do a web search for both of your names. Anything pop up? Not that it's comparable to a background check, but that it might show you if there's someone else with your same names. Inquire with your congressman; see if he can get more information. I highly doubt you were given such a crappy interview just because they wanted to see a few pieces of paper. Good luck, hon! Let us know how it goes. We're all here, standing right beside you.

Okay guys... here is the thing....

My flight will leave Brazil and go to Washington DC. Then we'll head up to Newark.

Will I have to get my bags and check them in again? Even though I bought the tickets to go to Newark as final destination and DC will be just a connection? If so, will I have to pay to check in the luggage and for extra weight (since International flights allows more than domestic)?

Oh God, I hope not, otherwise I'll be screwed! I'll have 1:45 min between flights and I really hope I can make it in time. My flight arrives in DC at 6:14am so hopefully customs will not be so busy....

Any inputs?

Never been through DC. But after going through customs at in Los Angeles, I had to pick up my bags and re-check them. Well.... not re-check them. Drop them off with the baggage/security officers on my way to the right terminal. Coming in that early, I wouldn't think it would be too bad. But still best to call the airlines and check.

Nat, I dunno if you're gonna make that or not :( DC will be your POE - you'll have to go through immigration then claim your bags, then go through customs then recheck them on your domestic leg - I'm sure. The limits on domestic here are the same so your weight should be ok and if your flying on the same carrier they shouldln't charge your to check them again. I'll be shocked if they let your bags go on a domestic after being on an international without going through customs. If everything goes just right and your through quick, you may make it..gonna be close girl..RUN!!

I asked Delta about Merlaine's bags. She said they'd be checked all the way to our destination (after customs) with no fees.

And Now... Should we go to US citizen line or visitor?

Depends on your airport. Some will say go to non-citizen line, some will say go to citizen line. There will probably be someone directing the flow who you can ask. If you're coming in with your spouse, you should be able to go with him to the citizen line no matter what.
