How should the war on drugs be fought?

Whenever I see brief clips of "Gangland" on History.com, I start to wonder if living in Texas or in Arizona is that dangerous. I've never watched an actual "Gangland" episode but I've heard that some drug giants from Mexico are able to infiltrate local gangs and it makes both parties even more ferocious.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said more would be done to cut US demand for drugs and to strengthen communities affected by the trade, signalling what some analysts consider a shift in the fight against drug violence.

Mrs Clinton was announcing a new $1.6bn US aid programme aimed at fighting the drug cartels. She said the new agenda "expands our focus beyond disrupting drug trafficking organisations" to include "strengthening institutions, creating a 21st century border, and building strong, resilient communities".

Drug-related violence has left 18,000 people dead in Mexico since 2006. Last week Ricardo Salinas, Mexico's second-richest person according to Forbes magazine, urged Mexico to legalise drugs to reduce violence tied to the narcotics trade.

Is the drugs conflict a broader social problem that goes beyond the drug cartels? How would you tackle it? Would legalising drugs help? How does the drug trade affect your community?

define 'gang member' because it some cities, if you're walking around with 2 or more people with you, you're automatically considered a 'gang.'

Gang members aren't necessarily the problem either.

The war on drugs is complete bullshit just ilke the war on terrorism. Things that can never be won.

License, register and tax as well

Agreed! Power taken away from gangs, increased safety for those who choose to use it, huge flow of money coming into the economy. It would create legitimate jobs, and boost the economy! Of course, with all of the threats and violence going on with a small boost to healthcare... can you imagine the backlash if we legalized these drugs? wacko.gif
