No, not illegal here, although you are meant to cycle on the path that is on the side of the direction of traffic, or something equally stupid. There are bike lanes too.

The stupid thing about bike lanes is, people turning right can invade them at junctions, and junctions are just about the most treacherous place for cyclists.

Yes. Bike lanes are dumb for that and many other similar reasons. There is simply no way to safely bike on anything but the most rural roads and people in rural communities don't really bike at all. Biking in urban and urbanizing-suburbs should be confined to parks and dedicated bike and pedestrian-only guideways.

I wouldn't mind there being proper dedicated cycle ways, but, I like biking to work, and using the road system is my only option, so there we are. I'm not sure if such a thing were introduced more people would actually use them, therefore making them worth the expense, or if in fact Americans are so attached to their vehicles that it's never going to be worth it - well, not until gas is $10/gallon - but then the roads will be empty anyway

No, they bounce from sidewalk to street and back again in order to avoid congestion. They blow through intersections, with and without traffic signals, without regard to red or green lights. Fail to stop for stop signs... I could go on and on....

If they were required to obey the same laws as an auto driver does it would be a different matter...

I am sure they are supposed to do that but ....
