Interesting situation,....but is he alive or dead???...it'll be really weird after having the same person for litterly 50 years in the same position, then all of a sudden he isnt there anymore.

I think it'll get better, but it'd be really interesting for someone to understand it, by visiting Cuba before Castro's death,.....and a few years after his death to see the differences.

I was there in 2003 (with my Canadian passport) and can say that even though the people were frightened to voice their views, they were very much in favor of capitalism.

When Russia imploded and could no longer support Cuba, the island turned to tourism, attracting Europeans and Canadians. The resorts are wonderful and a good value. The people who wait on you could be doctors, teachers, or engineers, trying to augment their salaries with tips. Everybody in Cuba makes about a dollar a day regardless of their profession. So finding ways to provide extra goods and services for tips was common. The entrepreneurial spirit was everywhere.

Life at the resorts in Holquin was paradise, but a short donkeycart ride into the nearest town was sickening. People lived in one-room houses with dirt floors and pigs going in and out. There was a decrepit apartment building with peeling paint and no windows the cart driver pointed out with pride. It that was the progress Fidel is responsible for, he should be run out of town.

By coming in contact with tourists from first-world, democratic countries, the Cubans have had their expectations and hopes raised. Fidel may have succession plans but it's probaby too late. The whole world wants a free Cuba.

I was listening to NPR on the drive home and they were interviewing a spokesman from Cuba... the reporter asked him where is Raul Castro? He replied something to the effect of "Where is ####### Cheney?" she said that's not the point, we just want to know when he'll make an appearance... he said "It's our business.... WE ARE NOT IN THE BUSINESS OF ENTERTAINING US MEDIA!"

Depends on what happens after he's gone. Hopefully the White House will stay out of it and allow the people of Cuba to figure this out on their own.
