It's true, they aren't. Why aren't they? Because property taxes keep going up and they can't afford to live in (or often, nowhere near) the communities they work in. It's a vicious cycle, a cycle which can not be broken by simply giving the teachers raises.

Ha, bow down to the master.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he will offer more state aid to school districts whose teachers agree to a wage freeze for the 2011 fiscal year.

...

Christie said the offer won't cost the state any more money because the state would save on Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes as a result of the wage freezes.

...

The incentive gives Christie the opportunity to point to teachers who refuse to wage freezes as the reason a school district is getting less state money than it could.

The carrot and stick method. So long as you keep both reasonable, it can be difficult to argue against it. Good for him. Now let's hope the teachers' union sees sense. Any odds on this? B-)
