Teachers union claims they're worried about the children, but this proves they're not....

Anecdotally speaking, the "rich" people I know who have moved to PA likely don't make much more 500K (2 incomes). That's basically a household with 2 middle-manager level jobs. The really wealthy aren't the ones buying up subdivisions in the Lehigh Valley (PA), it's these guys.

Just curious - what is the average property tax on say a $1,000,000 home in New Jersey compared to New York? PA?

OMG! You guys never gotten a raise. Working at IBM with starting salary of 60k. In three years, it became 77k!

I started at the same company... with a smaller starting salary than you did. In 3 years, however, I changed jobs twice and ended up much better. Move. Don't let the big blue make you fat and stupid.

I'd have to look that up. But anecdotally speaking, the people I'm referring to are selling near 1m homes in Jersey and buying equivalent 600-800K homes in PA.

You don't honor employee contracts by reneging on them. They either mean something or they don't. Teachers are no exception.

There is no place for employee contracts in the public sector. Those jobs should be at the convenience of the taxpayers, not the unions.

Police and fire also have negotiated contracts....but lets vilify the teachers...the scum of society.

Raise your hand if you work in the private sector and have had a raise in the last year. Raise your hand if you don't have to make a contribution to your healthcare. Not many hands out there.

One hand here. Raise yes, but I do contribute more to my health insurance. All told, I probably came out slightly ahead - the rising health insurance contribution sucked up a good bit of the raise. Tough times. Glass half full.

Christie wins a limited victory in his first skirmish against the NJEA in a big, middle class school district. Nice. Too bad they couldn't take back more than 1.4 M.

BRIDGEWATER — The Bridgewater Raritan Education Association has agreed to make $1.4 million in give backs in the 2010-11 district spending plan, Bridgewater Board of Education President Jeffrey Brookner announced at Friday’s Bridgewater-Raritan Board of Education meeting.

...

The Board ... is grappling with $10.2 million loss in state aid.

The Bridgewater Raritan Education Association’s $1.4 million tentative agreement equates to 19 teachers’ jobs to restore the nine-class period day at the high school, several teachers for elementary and middle school world language instruction.

 to the teachers union, the children do not come first. they don't even come second.

I guess if you think about it... why would they?

DO the Steel Workers unions care about Steel? Nope, they only care about growing the union.

THe Unions are the biggest road black to any real reform.

IIRC, they are the largest union in the country.... (thats a lot of power)

No, let's vilify the union the teachers belong to. Teachers are most certainly not scum, but their union has no compunction in making them look like it to the public eye. Just a little difference there. ;)

HAHAHAHA. The teachers unions are grabbing their ankles over this. Nice. Christie wins another one in a large, middle-class district.

EDISON — Faced with almost 170 layoffs, the Edison teachers union is proposing a wage freeze and medical contributions by employees — which it claims will result in total savings of about $3.5 million.

"It would be a nice gesture if the Board of Education will match our sacrifice and raise an additional $3.5 million from taxes," said Edison Township Education Association President Emil Ferlicchi. "It's not a prerequisite but it would be nice."

Call it a practical exercise in civics. :star:

He has had no victories yet in the smaller, rural districts or in the huge urban ones. So far all his victories have been in large middle-class suburban sprawl type areas.

California has a different situation where the state has little control over school funding, as most of that funding comes through local bond measures. It's too easy to go out to the community, and say, "It's all for the kids!" The voters suck it up, and property taxes keep going up as a result. Yet, the teachers continue to complain they aren't getting enough money.
