Bryant Gumbel on the Winter Olympics: "paucity of blacks ... makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention"

"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t care about them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying ... Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."

Right, because there are so many Norwegians and Austrians at the Summer Games! ;)

I'm familiar with Mr. Gumbel's argument, but it doesn't make much sense when you consider that more Caucasian people come from parts of the world where skiing and the like make much more geographical and climactic sense. But as I said, countries that tend to dominate at the Winter Games don't tend to make much of a showing at the Summer Games, either. Most countries aren't like the States with such a wild diversity of climates. (This is not to say that NO other country has diverse climates--a few do--but not many.)

You can't play basketball in the snow. LOL

No, Bryant's game is golf and sorry Bryant there's no golf in the Olympics. It's almost a sad commentary from him, I wouldn't have expected such reverse discrimination.

So only blacks are the world's greatest athletes? That makes no sense whatsoever, unless you assume that only sports that have a high number of blacks are actually real sports.

That's not reverse racism, but plain old racism...

Re-write that story about the Summer Games, say track, and repalce the reference to blacks with whites.

Do not know who Mr Gumbel is, but if this is not out of context, he is a #######.

First American black athlete to win a gold medal in an individual event at a Winter Olympics....Shani Davis wins gold in speed skating

Wonder if Bryant Gumble caught this news item? But then again, speedskating isn't a sport is it? /sarcasm
