Charles told me that this was once discussed a long time ago but alas, I have already posted this thread before he mentioned that.

You might want to share your brilliant thoughts in relation to splitting the OT in two.

Again, here's the link:

This has been broached in the past. Basically, you're asking for political topics to be "split off" into its own forum/subforum.

My position on this has always been, if the readership of OT ceases to be interested in political threads, they will quickly move off Page 1. As long as the readership is interested, they will stay top and center where they belong.

As for readers who aren't into it, they can focus their energies on posting alternative topics and drumming up their friends to post on them, effectively ousting political threads from Page 1.

If they don't think they're up to it (I happen to think they're not), perhaps a petition to Ewok to add "keywords" to threads and require a "politics" keyword on all political threads plus the ability to ignore by keyword.

That's pointless. Threads meander, as they are real conversations happening in real time. They may start political, then get hijacked into something else, then wander back again. Non-political threads may also do the same.

Besides, there is already a very simple built-in method to deal with this "problem". See a thread that doesn't interest you? Don't read it. Done.

Yes, and yet this objection is raised from time to time. I believe some people object to seeing a preponderance of political titles on Page 1. They're not into it, so they likely never read anyway. All they see is the title and that's enough.

This came up (a lot) during Campaign 2008.

It will die down.

Eventually something truly important will happen, like Michael Jackson's death or Tiger Woods' affairs.

Then the top OT pages will be full of that very important material, and silly things like the health and welfare of 310 million Americans will get pushed aside as they rightfully deserve.

Do you remember the weeks after MJ's death? I could barely breathe. Never mind VJ. You couldn't open a newspaper or flick on the TV news without thinking that the Messiah himself had arisen and died. Maybe he did.

REBIRTH OF THE NOOBS THREAD :bonk:

I like that OT is something of a free-for-all--everything from highly political and religious topics to gin & tonic (goodness! *hic*)--and don't see the advantage of treating political threads any differently. As Scandal mentioned, threads can take on a life of their own and go from political to nonpolitical and back again. I tend to avoid political threads anymore--although some recent posters have sucked me into making comments about health care--and it's easy enough to do.

It's cool that a thread about hemorrhoid treatment suggestions can appear beneath a thread about constitutional law. It's one of OT's charms. :star:

I remember this suggestion coming up around election time, and mid-term election time before that. I get that people who have no interest in political threads may tire of having to wade through them to get to the good stuff (Dear Joyce, for example), but the controversial stuff waxes and wanes.
